martin and weyrich.... so sad!

Posted by lingprof, Jun 18, 2010.

I just found out that this Paso Robles winery is out of business.  Very sad!  I have a couple of bottles of their Cabernet Etrusco, which I really liked, esp at a bargain price.  I hope the economy picks up before we lose too many more.

Anybody else lost one of their favorite small wineries to this recession....?

lingprof: Have you heard of Longshadow Ranch winery in Temecula? I have a friend who gave me an 02 CabSauv as a gift. I was wondering if I should pop it or put it away for a while. I've never tried any wines from that area. What's your take on the area.

I've been to Longshadow!  It's a cool place.  They're famous for doing things the old-fashioned way.  I think they use draft horses for plowing or maybe to press the grapes?  We liked it and bought some port.

I have no idea about how long to hold wines.  I just go by the tasting notes/reviews.  Still, with a Calif. Cab from that area, from '02, I would personally go ahead and drink it now.

Somebody on here will know more about it than I do.  Thoughts?

Keep in mind the idea of sustainability - when you see a super price on a good wine, often it means a grape grower selling at a loss at the start.  Or a winemaker who is better at making wine than sales.
