Matthew D. Taylor for you dmcker

Posted by outthere, Jun 4, 2012.

As things go I didn't have time to pick up the 09 Matthew D. Taylor Michaud Pinot Noir when I thought I would so I stopped by ACME this morning when I was passing through St Helena. I'll give it a few days or a week to settle down and then report with my findings. The somm at ACME said I'll really like it.

Stefan Blicker seems to like it too:

"Matt left Araujo and started his own label, Taylor Cellars, with seed money from true believer Bart Araujo. Matt is all about organic and biodynamics, (he ran the biodynamic farm at Araujo, as well) and he chose the Michaud Vineyard high up in the rocky Chalone mountains in Monterey County. Whatever he is doing, he should keep doing it.  The pinot is just fantastic, a real "holy-$*#$!-I've-never-had-a-pinot-quite-like-that" pinot. Dark, brooding, intense, muscular, but wonderfully balanced and super complex and layered. Just killer. I also find it incredibly underpriced for what it is. I'm not going to say more because I only have like 10 cases and when it's gone, I have to wait for the 2010. This is a pinot to buy every year. 'Nuf said!  ARRIVES ONE WEEK ---Stefan"

Signed up for the mailing list and they offered me a case of the '09 so it's not disappearing as fast as Stefan leads one to believe in the early part of his email. His note of "muscular" makes it sound like something not quite up my alley but I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks, Brian. Yeah, I saw that blurb from Blicker and the same 'muscular' worried me, too, though I usually allow for his marketing bluster. Even if his palate isn't the same as mine, I do somehow feel his heart is in the right place. Other aspects of his and others' descriptions did dangle fascination, though, thus my shout out in those other two threads.

Looking forward to your take on it.
