Napa Cab pick is on in August!

Posted by outthere, Aug 21, 2015.

I was in Calistoga at 6am this morning helping a friend who was picking her Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. First Cab pick in Napa this season. Two weeks sooner than her previous earliest pick.

Good looking fruit, but small berries and low yield. A scant 2.2T from the acre vineyard.

Vines are so tall they look like palm trees. Sure they weren't picking coconuts?

Seems really early for Cab. Wow.

They should call it all reserve Cab this year....still haven't had a chance to try that juice, will have to one day.

OT, was that EMH vineyards you were picking?

Greg's using emoticons! Should I play the Lotto today? ;-)

JD, neither have I. I have the '05-'08 plus the '10 and '12. It's kind of like Randy Dunn's wine in that you have to...

wait for it.

Vino, yep that's EMH.

Looking at those vines after seeing Burgundy this past April is like looking at the Sequoia trees after tending to a small bush.

Old School trellising.

Easier on picker's backs, with built-in sun protection for the grapes while they matured to boot.

It looks like Napa Sauvignon Blanc is also being harvested.  Quivet sent an e-mail, today:

The 2015 Quivet Cellars harvest has begun!  6am brought us two tons of picture perfect McGah Family Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc to kick off the season.  It's been warm & dry to say the least so 'Early' is the buzz word of the vintage.  Our weather this week finally feels 'fall like' with cool nights, 80 degree days and an excitement in the air that harvest is upon us.  Even with our hot, dry summer - the Northern California spring rains were enough to get us through harvest and 2015 looks to be brilliant with slightly lower yields.  As we begin to crush our way into our Pinot & Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards, we like to remind you that September and October are delightful months to visit the Napa Valley.  There is a contagious energy in the air around harvest, an experience everyone should enjoy at least once in life. Our doors are always open for tastings, please don't hesitate.
