new to site and have questions

Posted by nventure, Nov 1, 2009.

I stumbled on the site a couple of weeks ago and I love it! I was looking for a FAQ section but couldn't find it. I will ask my questions here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

- I would like to keep track of the price I paid for a bottle since the price for bottles is not always available, how can I do that? Can I just put a private note?
- When listing wines one of the options is to list them by recommendation. I have noticed that the recommendations don't necessarily match the snooth rating. What are the recommendations based on?
- When entering the info for a bottle so that I can rate it I sometimes end up with a long list of wines with only slightly different descriptions and am not always sure which to pick, ex "forest glen merlot". Any hints on how to pick the right one? What if the vintage I had is not on the list?
- Some wines are listed by specific vintage. Is there a way to collapse the ratings ignoring the vintage? For example if a bottle has been rated for 10 different vintages is it possible to get an overall rating for the wine which combines the ratings for all the vintages?

Hi Nick,

Welcome to Snooth.

Allow me to answer your questions.

Yes you can include the pricing info in your private note.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Snooth rating not matching the recommendation. In the search results recommended wines are chosen by value and rating, as well as the reliability of the rating, ie more reviews gives us greater confidence in the cumulative rank of the wine.

These duplicates can be merged by and hand of Snooth member. Simply use the drop down menu from the interact icon. You'll also find the recommend a missing vintage link there for creating new wines.

There is no way to collapse rankings into a single entity across vintages. Just out of curiosity why would you want to see that?

Thanks Gregory the info will help me navigate the site.

I thought of collapsing rankings when I came across a wine that had only 1 or 2 reviews for any given vintage but had been rated across several vintages. I thought collapsing the rankings could have given me a better ranking of the overall quality of the wine vs looking at a limited number of reviewers. I live in Quebec which has a government run liqueur board, the only vintage available at these stores was not rated so I wanted to get an idea of the overall quality of the wine. Maybe it's naive to think that you could collapse the rankings and get an idea of what the current vintage available might have to offer, still learning :)

NVenture - thats a good question. We've thought about creating such a 'meta' page, so if you were looking at Robert Mondavi Chardonnay, you'd be able to learn about the wine in general, and not just the 2005, or 2004 vintages.

At the moment we have pages on the wines themselves (vintage specific), and pages on the winery/region/varietal etc - these group pages can help you learn more across vintages, but its not tied to a specific product.

The winery group pages, in particular, have some of the information you are looking for though - for example a chart showing how the ratings for their wines has evolved over time.

Welcome to the site by the way.
