First Facebook now Snooth. I am looking to make a few new friends to share some wine and conversation with.  A question...would you take a pay cut to be a wine consultant at a major retail wine chain. I may have this opportunity and could use some wisdom. Thanks.  Robert

I think it depends on how badly you need the money.  ;)

Working with wine, for me, has somewhat turned it into a chore, but I guess that happens in any profession.  At least it's a chore you can drink.

Welcome to Snooth!

I would certainly consider it. We have to do something with our lives and working with wine was one of the most attractive options for me!

How much of a cut? ;-)  If the other job isn't totally onerous, and the pay decent, there's always the fact that you can set aside more money for a lifestyle that allows more purchase of wine and time to drink it, in interesting locales  (away from the shop, anyway)....

my advice is to ensure that the culture and philosphies of the major chain are in tune with yours.

My concern with the major chains is they often have a "box moving" philosophy rather than a genuine interest in building a fine wine business.

So do your research and if they align with your thinking and oyu are compfortable take the plunge, only time will tell if you will enjoy it.

Thanks to all for your input...mulling over my options with a Sterling Cabernet 2007...nice dark color...if only the flavor matched the color.

If you can sustain yourself with a pay cut, do it.  It's extremely important to be enamored with what you do for a living. I have a health care company for the elderly and seeing satisfaction on their faces is the best part of my life (next to a great bottle of (Cabernet Sauvignon)
