New Wine Forum Under Test - What do you think?

Posted by Really Big Al, Feb 8.

Guys and Gals:

We've been talking about creating a new wine forum over the past year and to my knowledge nobody has done much to make this a reality.  I've spent the last few hours attempting to set up my first wine forum on my home website that I normally use for my computers and motorcycle activities.  The software is now installed and I have two discussions configured for testing - Weekend Wines and Weekday Wines.  I would like some folks to help me test it and make recommendations.

To get started, you are only allowed to join by getting an email invitation from an existing member of my Wine-Lovers-Forum.  That's the only method I have successfully configured so we'll start with that.  It will definitely limit the ability of spammers to get into the forum, and even if they do, I can block them being the all powerful administrator.

To start, please post your email address in the discussion to this new topic.  I will then send you an invitation to join.  For trusted individuals, I will make them moderators.  Once you get your invitation, you click on the link and it permits you to create a username / password and log in.  You should be able to upload pictures but they are somewhat limited in size at this point.  My "35%" reduced pictures are uploading fine so I'll worry about increasing the image size later.  I think it's limited to 2 MB right now.

Tell me what you think about this site.  If it sucks, we'll drop it and keep what we got.  If you like it, we'll invite more members to join and move on.  Feel free to create new topics too.  I need to have a good test to see what is lacking or perhaps I need to tweak a few things.  Again, this is my first ever forum.

Post your email addresses below and I'll provide you with login access.  The site is limited in what it shows you until you log in.  The site is at:

You can send me a private message with your email and username in it if you wish.  Help me test the new site.

Blatantly trying to poach users, eh?

If only the Admins here cared. About anything.

And no, Al, you don't want people to post their private messaging details in a public forum. Privacy in these times is problematic enough. Can remember having debates with folks back at the end of last decade about how personal details from Facebook combined with email addresses (and even IP addresses, since they are often easy to acquire) could soon cause problems for folks. Hey, that was a kindler, gentler, good-old-days era....

Ok then DM, send me your email address and I'll send you an invite.  I went through the effort to set it up because of the problems we have here with spammers.  Help me test it by posting new topics and commenting to existing ones.

So, with you guys out, that means this forum would be officially dead.

No, Diego.  Most of us have a presence on multiple forums.

Diego, that platform of Al's is only in planning/alpha phase now, and should have little bearing on Snooth per se. As Mark mentions many of us are talking to people about wine in other places already, whether on Facebook, at WineBerserkers or elsewhere. Please do continue here as often as you're able.

Salud.

I've sent EMARK an invitation.  DM, would you care to give it a try?  If so, send me a private message with your e-mail address.

Diego, would you like to try it?  I need your email address.

I've sent invitations to Paul and Randy this morning.  Once you guys are in, let me know what you think.  I understand the thing about  being invested in our current site, but alas, nothing on the Internet is guaranteed to be there tomorrow.  Sites come and go.  My home site has been around since the early 2000 era, at least 15 years.  I pay about $140 a year for my domain and it was mostly to support my computer hobby and then our motorcycle group (WORMS).  I branched out to create web pages for our vacations and then for other peoples activities, like wedding pictures and such.  I've helped a lot of computer folks by hosting their images over the years.

The bottom line is that I have a lot invested in my site in terms of time and personal effort.  I expect to keep it going at least another 10 years.  But this forum thing is new to me, in terms of hosting it.  So help me out and identify issues that hopefully I can address.  It won't be exactly like our current forum, but maybe it will be better.  At least there is no advertising!

EMARK is currently testing.  He found that there is a size limitation to image uploads (2 MB); apparently, size does matter.

Problems are going to occur with moderating, bot infiltration, maintenance, storage, server crashes, BBCode, and more, but the most important issue is the network effect.

So Greg, do you want to help test the new site?  No crashes from my site in the past, except for maybe one day they were moving to a new server, in ten years.  I'm very happy with the company hosting my domain.  I've helped lots of people post pictures in the past, including wedding photos and of course my vacation web pages.  It's been worth the money over the years.

Send me your email in a private message.  Several people have joined and are now testing.......

I have two gentlemen in the new wine forum testing things out.  Invitations have been sent to five more who provided me their email addresses via PM in this wine forum.

Are you getting tired of the spam we see every morning?  I'm deleting some still, but I'm spending more time testing the new wine forum so we don't have to worry about spam.

I would like more testers to post comments and images - I want to see a topic roll over to another page if it does that.

The software is an upgrade. Easier to use.

I changed the banner to make it a bit smaller in height.  I want the length to be what it is.

So, I propose we ask existing testers to give us their initial assessment of the new Wine Lovers Forum.  Is this something we can transition to?  I would like more testers to join (about six people have been invited but have not yet joined) early next week, prior to Valentine's Day.

If you know someone who loves wine, and you join the new Wine Lovers Forum, you can send them an invitation to join us.  I don't think we'll have any issues with spammers at the new site, as I have the power to delete them even if one of us inadvertently invites a spammer to join.

Does anyone like the new banner picture?  That was a wine party I poured at for a bunch of early-20's ladies at our wine friends house.  Lots of fun, I might add....

I am hoping we can start to transition over to the new wine forum soon.  I think it's running well.  I've had enough of the spam coming in at Snooth...
