Recent Albarino's

Posted by MReff, Nov 2, 2011.

Since I was not able to attend the virtual tasting this past Tuesday, I figured that I would try two of the Albarino's that the snooth gods sent to me.

Zios 2010 Some nice toasty aromas refined and clean with a short finish with some hints of fruit but not overbearing.  Very nice.

Paco Lola 2010 Less toast and more minerals and straw, some fine apple or pear like fruit.  Also refreshing but yet refined.

My wife lked the Paco while I enjoyed the Zios better.  I am glad that the Albarino's are getting better in style, I recall having one years ago while in North Carolina or Maryland, which was absolutely dismal.  Glad to see that Spain is doing well with this nice varietal.

I was pleasantly surprised by the showing of the 3 I opened. A great bargain varietal that was the perfect match for the 83º temps we had Tuesday.

  • Burgans - Was the weightiest of the 3 but kind of one dimensional on the flavor profile. Still I liked it.
  • Martin Codax - Had a great mineral/stone fruit nose, lightest palate of the 3, refreshing.
  • Laxas - Mouth coating texture with tropical and citrus notes. Seemed to thicken on my palate.
