Travel to Canadian Wineries

Posted by LadyDriver, Dec 9, 2009.

We've traveled many times to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia on the west coast of Canada to tour wineries there .... the scenery is awesome, the wineries plentiful & varied. Although I can't make a personal recommendation regarding the Eastern part of Canada, Ontario is quickly become world renowned for its' wineries, too.

Hi and welcome!

I've been to many Ontario wineries and there are some good ones. I'm looking forward to making a trip to the Okanaga soon. Many friends have told me of great wineries. What would be your favorites there?

Sorry this took so long .... St Hubertus is a favorite, we also like Summerhill & Quail's Gate .... some have gone very commercial, such as Mission .... we haven't been for a few years & it seemed that every year there were new ones. We prefer smaller, family owned concerns if we can find them. I would do a few one day on the Kelowna side, then cross over to Westbank & do a few on that side another day. There are also some in the NE direction, towards Vernon .... House of Rose was very nice, there was another in the same area called Bounty Cellars, I think .... if I recall correctly, it was a very pretty setting.

Have done a few tours down from the Kelowna area to Oliver. My father used to live in Kelowna, so he effectively became the wine bus tour driver :)

Here's a good Winery map for visitors to this area:

Some personal favorites:

- Gray Monk (North of Kelowna). Gets a nod for their lake-view resturant, definitely one of the longest running wineries in Canada. Their economical Latitude 50 series White is a fav here.

- Cedar Creek ... another winery with a lake-view resturant. Their Cab-Merlot blend was a fav here.

- SummerHill ... I believe this is the most visited winery in the Okanagan (proximity to Kelowna helps there) and many tour buses pull in here. It's hardly quaint, but they do have some nice offerings. Known for their award winning sparkling. Also checkout the lake-view resturant if you have the time.

- Quail's Gate ... another winery with a lake-view resturant (my fav of all). Love the Pinot Noir's here. They do flights at the resturant so you can sample many of their wines for a reasonable price.

- Mission Hill: As LadyDriver mentioned ... it's hardly a quant little winery w/ it's tour-bus parking and all. Don't let that stop anyone from going... great architecture, spectacular lake-view's, and they do a good tour. Sadly when it comes to their wines, my palette could not distinguish differences in many of their reds (nor could my fiance). I only liked their best... the Oculus @ $70+ a bottle. The rest ranked amongst the least memorable on multiple tours.

- Dirty Laundry: A cute winery with some good wine. Their Bordello blend (Cab/Merlot/Cab Franc) is a favorite! The wine shop sells lingerie and.... other laundry.

- Jackson Triggs: Not much notable about the winery itself... huge operation much like their eastern Ontario location. Produce some consistant, reasonably priced reds! Can't go wrong...

- Sumac Ridge: Another winery with a resturant (have not tried). Love their Brut, and black sage series of red's.

- La Vieux Pin: Some of the best red's in the province IMO! Known for their Pinot Noir's (tasted their 'Belle'), and also their Merlot's.

- Burrowing Owl: Beautiful winery with a boutique hotel & resturant. Loved their Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir & Cab Franc
