What is near Washington DC?

Posted by shsim, Sep 26, 2018.

I just moved to the area and am wondering where to visit? I have heard plenty about upstate New York, New Jersey and Finger Lakes areas. Please enlighten me with your knowledge! Also, know any good places to get wines?

WHOA. Shsim, we haven't heard from you for years.

It may or may not be apparent to you, but the Snooth Forum is not what it used to be.  The powers that be allowed the Forum to be completely taken over by spammers.  That problem seems to have been resolved, but the damage was done.  Many, many regulars just moved on.

Let me see if I can get you some help with your question.  Please be patient.

Emark, yea I had to put all my time and effort into school for awhile. I am good in that regard now so getting back into serious wine drinking! Good to be back.

Yea I noticed that but was not sure exactly what had happened. Hopefully it will get back to normality!

Try Virginia. Lots of wine there. And what the hell, try Trump's wine too!

I live in the Northern Virginia area (Springfield) and yes, there are lots of wineries around here.  Our favorite is RdV in Delaplane VA, but you'll need to make an appointment to taste the wines.  We belong to RdV, Stone Tower Winery (Loudoun County VA) and Boxwood Winery (near Middleburg, VA).  I can recommend all three and we've visited plenty more over the past few years.  This Sunday we are meeting friends at Cana Winery (also near Middleburg, VA) and that will be our first time there.  The closest one to us is the Paradise Springs Winery in Clifton, VA.  Overall there are about 250 wineries in Virginia, including that Trump Winery which I will never visit even though their wines are ok (not great).

So Shsim, there are places in Washington DC too, including a winery down by the waterfront.  Plenty of nice restaurants in the district too.  As for wine stores, I like Unwined (two stores, both in Alexandria VA) and of course Total Wine & Beverage.  Even Wegmans grocery stores carry a good selection at decent prices.

If you're interested, I have a wine forum hosted on my domain, which I started in February 2018 when the Snooth forum had gone to hell in a hand basket.  I run it by invitation only, thus preventing spammers from coming in.  Send me a private message in this forum if you are interested in the other forum.

Here is a picture of me and one of the hostesses at Stone Tower Winery back in July of this year:

One area that has always been of interest to me, sadly never been to, is the North Fork area of Long Island. They do grow and make some interesting wines there.  Something to think about and report back on.

Thank you all for the suggestions!

Really Big Al, I have those on my map now. I might be able to swing by soon! I have heard through the grapevines that wegmans has a great selection so it is good to hear it confirmed here. How was Cana winery?

RCKR, I added that onto the map! Looks like an interesting place to explore! I wonder how they would compare with the vineyards around Cape Cod area including Martha's Vineyard.

Shsim, good to see you here again!

My father-in-law lives in Reston and his favorite wine store in the District is Calvert Woodley.  Excellent selection, lots of Euro wines that you might not find anywhere else and fairly decent prices.  In Reston, my favorite wine store is the Wine Cabinet.

Have fun exploring.

I think VinoVino and I met at the Wine Cabinet a few years ago for a special tasting - was it Duckhorn perhaps?

The Cana Winery was ok, and typical of most Virginia wineries.  This was a first time for Sandra (my wife) to meet Jennifer and her fiance Daniel.  They plan to marry in about a year at the winery, and they were there to sign the paperwork to reserve their date.  We took home a bottle of Merlot, and Jenn insisted on buying it for us.

Thank you Vinovino for the suggestions! I have been to Calvert Woodley and they do have a great selection along with knowledgeable staff.

Thank you for the report Big Al! Would be fun to check out Virginian wines at some point :) I went to Wegmans in Maryland to check out the wine selection but I hadnt realise Maryland's alcohol laws :( Will have to check it out again in Virginia.

Just kidding.
