What is the best wine store in Manhattan?

Posted by rosewino, Jan 4, 2009.

I work downtown, near City Hall, and have yet to find a wine store that carries affordable and interesting wines in the area. I would appreciate recommendations for that area, as well as the rest of Manhattan.

I don't know any in downtown, but the best wine store in Manhattan is Sherry-Lehman. I moved from NYC to LA 4 years ago, and I use Sherry-Lehman as my go-to when I want to send gifts to my friends in the city. They have a great selection and will deliver anywhere on the island.

your best bet is Chambers Street wine in Tribeca. They have an interesting array of different types of wines as well as older vintages. I disagree with Idubbe, Sherry Lehman can be a bit over priced IMO. Depending upon what you are looking for SL could be great. Instead I often browse Astor, PJ's (often the best price in the city and they deilver), some times Park Ave liqour.

Also WIne Library has some of the best prices as well

I'll second Chambers, especially considering your proximity.

Also worth looking at in Manhattan would be Astor wines. They have a vast selection of affordable wines, many of which are interesting and unusual.

I'll stop there for the moment.

Wine Library isn't in Manhattan, its in New Jersey, but it does have good prices.

I'll also say Chambers - they are really the best wine shop below Canal st.

Where in the city do you live? There are numerous great shops in other neighborhoods.

I'm posting late here....
But if you are down at Chambers Street, you should also pop by Frankly Wines (West Broadway between Warren & Murray). It's a tiny store, but they make up for the size by being very enthusiastic and always carrying a number of super geeky wines.

My favorites: Chambers Street Wines, Crush, Appellation Wine & Spirits

If you are not able to find affordable and interesting wines in the area, please consider We ship for free to NY and you won't have to pay any taxes either.

I worked by City Hall for years. Spent a lot of time in City Hall too at various hearings and meetings. Chambers is the place to go in that area - they've got fairly specific palate preferences, but they are passionate about their wines for sure. And more recently, right around the corner, Frankly Wines opened. She's just as passionate, has lots of experience in the business, and is just so damned nice that you feel good about shopping there. Both places try really hard to find things that aren't really mainstream, so they're excellent places to browse around. You can walk up to Astor Wine on Lafayette from City Hall. I've done it countless times. That's a bigger store than just about anyplace in Manhattan but they still try to have a selection that's about more than just a few wines you can find anywhere. It's only a few stops up from City Hall by train, or about 15 minutes by foot if you walk fast. If you take a long lunch, you can try September Wines on Ludlow. Can't really get there easily by train from City Hall so you gotta cut through Chinatown and walk fast. I've done it but it means you need an understanding boss.

There are so many great shops in the city. I believe you should try to make it up to Sherry Lehman simply because of their selection (not necessarily prices). Astor (which many have mentioned) is really great from a value standpoint and they do also have some great gems to be found. As for great salesmanship and Italian wine, Italian Wine Merchant is great but be prepared to pay extra.

If its just value and selection, though, I'd say Astor. (can't really comment on Chambers Street but only because I haven't ever been there.)
