What is your favorite wine for under $13 bucks?

Posted by Cheese and Grapes, Jul 27, 2009.

My husband and I have put ourselves on a budget (considering the state of the economy) and are trying to only buy wines for $13 and under. Anyone out there have a favorite that fits that price in mind?

where you live will dictate price & selection. That said, you are hunting in the relm of value vs quality. I would consider some name brands that drive consistancy; KJ whites (their reds got a bit too expensive for the quality in my opinion); Pennsfold as an Aussie name brand, all the wines are solid. Chilean, Spanish & South African wines will ring the bell here for pretty decent finds; Ken Forrester Pinotage from South Africa $10; Santa Carolina Cabernet Chile $9; or try El Coto Rioja $12; The best part is you won't lose a lot of money trying new things until you hit on a personal gem. Good hunting!

There are great deals to be had coming from Spain and Portugal these days, mostly red though. I would turn my attention first to wines like

2007 is a banner year for France's Rhone valley so some Cotes du Rhone wildly over-performed and are worth investigating. That same vintage has also affected the 2006's, they followed the excellent 2005's and while they are very good they are being closed out to make room for the 2007's.

Do you have a favorite wine, or region, that might help us focus our recommendations?

Am a big fan of the Trader Joe's Reserve Zin, for $10 you get a hell of a lot of fruit and power:

My favorite wines are zins, syrahs, pinot noir, malbecs, viongier, gewurztraminer. Mostly fruit fowards, light to medium bodied, but my husband is into the full bodied old world styles. Thank you for your help.

I love Blackstone Merlot, it is 10 -12 dollars and has bit of berry flavor, and a slight kind of woodiness. round and yummy

Gladiator Merlot isn't bad. It's around $9 here.

Great to hear people's suggestions! I'm a fan of poking around Snooth myself (that shouldn't be a surprise). Especially since you seem to know what you like, it can be a great way to find something new to try.

Generally I am a Cabernet guy, but considering the difficulty in finding a real representative at under $13, so I often get a merlot. Merlot, also being the bride's preference, can be well represented at this price point. Having said that, I am currently into Red Diamond Merlot and Duck Pond Merlot. Both from the pacific nw and are quality. The Duck Pond is exceptional at this price. Root 1 from Chile is a solid Cab.

Over the past two decades I've often gone to Louis Martini reds for quite decent quality in the lower price bracket. Haven't had any in the last couple of years, but I believe you can still find their Sonoma cabs for this price, and other of their varietals, as well.

Château Gamage Entre-Deux-Mers 2007 showing great sauvignon blanc minerality and acidity, nearly perfect with shellfish. Best $7 dollar white I've had in some time...

The 2006 Ercavio (Tempranillo) is not as polished as the '04 was- but it's also much younger. It needs a bit of time, a decant, and a steak or a damn good cheeseburger to bring out its best.

It's a $12.99 that behaves like a $20. Easy.

Spain, without a doubt, is where it's at, right about now.

I'm still going with EVIL Cabernet from R Wines:

I haven't had any recent vintages but the 05 an 06 were very good for the price.

And I guess my selection from the BevMo 0.05 sale doesn't count because it was average cost of $10.

You can find some great malbecs in this price range. I would suggest Luigi Bosca Malbec Reserva 2006, Crios de Susana Balbo 2007, 2007 Alamos Malbec Selección or 2008 Maipe Malbec. All are good and fairly fruit forward. These wines range from $10-15.

Oh and if you can find it Bodegas Ateca Garnacha de Fuego 2007 is a steal for $8.

Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc was my "summer white" last year, at generally $10-12/btl.

I'll throw in my $13 worth and add the 2007 Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa. Had it at a wine tasting last night among five others and this one stood out!
Earthy like most S.A., but not too much. Great fruit, body and finish to boot. Try it.

One bit of advice: Shop around! There are discount wine places or places like Trader Joes or World Market that will have the same wine for less than at the grocery or liquor store.

Four Vines "Naked" Chardonnay: $12 or less
Four Vines Old Vine Zin: $11
Casillero Del Diablo Carmenere: $8 or $9
Magnificent Wines House Red Wine: $9 or so

I could happily drink any of these every day of the week.

I tried a Sebeka Cabernet Pinotage (South Africa) for about $8 recently that I liked and will definitely pick up several bottles again just to have on hand. I also like the Black Opal Cab/Merlot, which I used to get in Chicago for around $9. Unfortunately haven't seen it at my local wine store since I moved to Connecticut.

I recently ordered a case of wine from Chambers Street Wines in NY. They have some good recommendations for wines under $12. Most of what I ordered were wines under $12. I have been favorably impressed with their recommendations. I am kind of new at this, but I don't think you can go wrong with their recommendations.
