Anyone who can continue to work producing art year after year and is good enough to make you change how you look at the world? Not commercial dross, but something truly striking. At the moment your view is shifted he or she who provides the fulcrum for the shift is at least momentarily the greatest...

Well in that case, it has to be Chuck Jones!

Awesome.  I need to check in more often!

William's bananas were truly art, even if he purloined the photo.

I've been working too much, and racing down in Washington state (and drinking their latest vintages and they're ALL fantastic).

I'll make an effort to pop in and say hi.

Chuck Jones, of Warner Bros. Studios, naturally, for his redesigns of Yosemite Sam, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.

Absolutely. He was one of the truly inventive folks ever. And cartoons done with computers completely miss the point.

George Lucas had a firm, Industrial Light and Magic, that did research and development on a number of things. They pointed out that light reflecting off a golden orb wasn't pure white, but was somewhat golden. They did a lot of really interesting and creative work, but at the same time they put a stake in the heart of cartoons.

Why?

Because people started making cartoons in which the idea was to make characters and things appear MORE realRemember that horrible movie with Tom Hanks where he actually acted the part and they reduced it to a cartoon? So that the cartoon character would have realistic moves?

That was a tragedy of epic proportions. If you're aiming for realism, how can somebody get run over and flattened out? How can they stretch twenty feet? How can they cut off a branch that they're standing on and take 20 seconds to realize it before falling? How can an anvil drop from the sky?

Chuck Jones, freed from all those constraints, made art. The current folks at Pixar and even Disney, make marketing vehicles.

Beautiful, GT.  I could not have put it better myself - assuming that is not insult, and I think it not.  My whole life revolved around these characters -as did, I believe, your life did as well.  We could talk long and deeply about these artistic creatios which, if we are honest, are  among the greatest and original artistic creations of modern America.  Great interpretation of the genre, plus the realisation that education is needed to keep our understanding of these art forms in the forefront.  My compliments.

Funny Duncan. My mother in law would have said the same. She loved Mozart, as does my wife. One of the first operas I saw my wife in was The Magic Flute. Her family went around the country starting opera companies. Her father was a brilliant musician and conductor and to bring it back around, when he retired from his last position, Chuck Jones sent him a cel and a note with best wishes from Chuck and Bugs. Turns out Chuck Jones was an opera lover and had attended a few of my F-I-Law's performances. We have that cell in our house and for both my wife and me, it's one of the most important pieces of art we have.

Of course, if I had a da Vinci, I would be quite happy too!
