I'd like to get a thread started on favorite pairings for New Years Eve dinners/parties.

Of course, the go-to-wine for any New Years celebration is champagne (I'll be making a list later today). One of my favorite starts is the triple-fried sweet potato fries with truffle mayo I submitted for the pairing competition, with a nice, buttery champagne with good acidity. Launois Blanc de Blanc is a possibility.

Anyone else? I'm looking for inspiration :)

I've never really thought about the food aspect of New Year's, but I suppose it's as good a time as any. Have heard fish is good luck in some cultures, which would of course pair with whites, champagne, and some lighter reds. Looking forward to picking out the wines, I have a few options.

White - 2010 1er Fourchaume (Mag)

Red - More 2010 village Burg? Maybe I'll pick up something from Oregon, or go for that Mag of 09' Cru Bourgeois. Hmmm

Champagne - Just have one bottle too pricey for the occasion. Just had the standard Veuve/Schramsberg for Christmas so would like to pick up something nice in the $30 range as I've done in the past. Ayala? Just found an old bottle from my folks wedding from the 70's and remember enjoying one from last year at that price point.

I used to love Ayala before they got bought by Bollinger. Now, to separate the brands more, it has become too crisp and sharp for my tastes. I prefer the round generosity of Bollinger.

Did you see my champagne/sparkling list for New Years?

It's in the order from cheaper/simpler bubbly (though great quality!) to ultimate luxury at #10. Where are you at? In NYC or Cali a lot of the wines on my list are available. If you can get the Launois at 30 bucks I'd go for that, though for real champagne it makes a difference to go up to 40-50 bucks.

In Sweden, lobster and filet mignon are standard New Year's fare, but I'd like to get a bit more creative this year... Maybe home made high-end dumplings?

Henri Giraud is a really good producer - I haven't tried that particular bottle (only their basic cuvée and the Hommage) but would not for a second hesitate to try it at that price.

Might just have to bite on it then...though I think I'll save it for next year.

I see a local shop has a Henriot tasting this weekend, seems pretty tempting.

I'd definitely go to a Henriot tasting - we had several of their wines in a journalist tasting this fall and I was impressed. Definitely a "house style" with lots of toasted nuttiness that I enjoyed. Let me know what you think if you go!

Henriot is big in Miami...had it at a Wholefoods tasting recently...very affordable too!
