Wine storage in NYC

After reading about Greg's cellar of dreams, I got hit with the bug to put a little wine away for later. It's funny, too because only a week ago I think I said here that I Don't Do That.

But maybe things change?

Anyway I can't build my own, but does anyone have any good experiences to share about storage facilities in NYC? Of course if you want to shout out for places elsewhere feel free to do so but I'm definitely looking for a place I can get to without planes, trains or automobiles...

Mark - be prepared to open your wallet, its never cheap to store wine, and is much more expensive in NYC. That said here's a good list of wine storage places:

Note that most places in the US charge per locker, not per case. There are also often processing fees - ie, a cost for them to find the bottles for you.

Lets say you start out small, (using the prices from New York Wine Storage - chosen at random), here's the pricing for 1 case for 1 year with some limited use/changing of the wine:

- Storage: $1.70 per case per month = $20.40 per year
- In/Out fees: $2 to check the wine in (same to check that case back out, but lets assume you dont withdraw it all in the first year)
- When you do come to call on the wine, then you either pay the out fee of $2, or you ask them to remove a single bottle at a cost of $2.50 per bottle.
- Delivery: $3.50 per case, with a $10 minimum
- Insurance (because lets be fair, you want to cover your assets) is extra

For a small amount of wine, unless its very very high end stuff, I think you'd do better with your existing wine fridge, but just forcing extra restraint on those nights when you go Viking on the stock. Really, I'd say go buy a padlock and throw away the key, you'd then have to get out the bolt cutters to open it and get at your stock.

The other day I was driving through Hollywood and saw one of these storage places. I thought "cool" but how much is it (now I know). The sad part though... on the way driving back by it, it was on fire! Yeah- get the insurance! (Wonder if they tell their clients that their wines were briefly boiled?)

Can I second Philip's recommendations?

I have some acquaintances who own wine shops and wine storage companies in NYC and they make far more money off of storage than they do selling wine!

Even I'm thinking of buying a fridge at this point, but you really need to make sure you have some booze so you dont crack open anything meant to age in an act of desperation

seem there is a racket for just about everything these days?  hey, if you want i have some space for rent it is a little below ground level that keeps relatively constant temp and haven't had a bottle go bad yet?  of course it's in southern ct. and an hour from the city...maybe i should go into the bus. and make a few $ for more wine for me!!!
