Aglianico

Name of varietal: Aglianico

Common synonyms: Aglianico del Vulture, Ellenico, Ellanico, Eilanikos, Agliatica, Uva Nera

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to either Greece or Italy

History of the grape: There is documented proof of the existence of Aglianico in Basilicata, Italy as far back as the 6th century. There are three versions of how it got there, and as of press time, there is no concrete DNA proof of what is correct. One theory is that it was brought to Italy from Greece, and is the reason why it is sometimes called “Ellenico” meaning “from Helena,” a.k.a. Greece. Another is it was planted by the Greeks in Campania to grow a local Falernum, which was their equivalent of a First Growth. The third theory is that it grew wild in Southern Italy, but was first discovered by the Greeks, who called it “Eilanikos,” which means “vine in the trees.” So the Greeks had something to do with it, but just what is uncertain Read more »

  • Interesting tasting DV. You were pretty much all over with the Cabs which I ... something like Nebbiolo or Aglianico. Those pretty much just come from Italy, either the north or the south, and although people are making them in a few other places, there is very little made outside of Italy. So people often compare them to the standards they kn... Read More

  • So on a whim we decided to visit British Columbia. But we flew up to ... ... ... interest in Tempranillo, Aglianico, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Gamay, Cab Franc, and others. It's still a learning curve for many of those and maybe some will never be anything to write home about but you don't know until you try. There's also plenty of Pinot Noir, bu... Read More

  • Mastroberardino Lacrimarosa Rose Irpinia 2017

    Snoothrank:

Light aromas of strawberry with a butter and aged cheese aroma. Fresh spice, cherry and strawberry fruit and a tart acidity on the palate here with a bold, floral potpourri mid palate and fruit around the edges, this mostly falls off a bit on the finish with some licorice and cherry notes lingering. • Mark, nice one there, don't believe I've tried anything ... in it.Now Aglianico is a fairly popular grape in southern Italy but is somewhat sparsely planted in the States. The Italians seem to be doing it but I don't know of any other US producers making a rose out of it other than Ryan and Megan Glaab. Gotta say this is one tasty rose, more st... Read More
