In North America, Aligoté’s cold-weather tolerance has provided it with homes in Washington State, British Columbia and Ontario, as well as some temperate areas of California. More cold-resistant than its big sister, Chardonnay, Aligoté is widely grown in the cold climes of Eastern European wine-producing countries such as Russia. In Eastern Europe Aligoté is a highly regarded varietal for still and sparkling wines alike. Possessing similar, but less pronounced, character than Chardonnay, it is usually lighter in weight, more acidic and less age worthy. In its Burgundian homeland, this white grape is often restricted to cool hilltops, among other less ideal locations in the Côte D’Or. Aligoté wines from Burgundy command only a fraction of Chardonnay prices for growers. Aligoté’s influence more broadly in France is diminishing and total plantings dropping. Its best expression is in the Bouzeron AOC, located along the northern Read more »

  • Chateau de Chamilly Aligote 2015

I bought this bottle of wine for £12 from the website Aligote is an appellation created in 1937 for white wines made of the aligote grape from anywhere in the Burgundy region. The aligote grape was traditionally mixed with a blackcurrant liquer to make a drink called kir and is also a grape widely grown in eastern... • Solaricco Fresco 2013

This wine - from an old Soviet era winery in Moldova - is strikingly unique; it has a nose of icing sugar, preserved lychee nut with (perhaps) a hint of pear. The entry is soft - almost empty of depth - with a kind of wild white berry flavour beneath a sea of distilled water. The finish is extremely short and light, but surprisingly perfect fo... • Had some Beaujolais Blanc last night that an experienced wine person was ... ... ... funky with maybe some aligote in it. Went and checked the AOC regs to be sure and, as I remembered, only chard can be used in Beaujolais for whites. Interestingly enough it's OK to include aligote and melon de bourgogne (muscadet) in the Beaujolais *reds* but... Read More

  • I've only had the Aligote and CdlR. We talked about the Aligote and it was an interesting call by Laurent to in the end make it 100% Aligote, but I think that's what makes Laurent one of the icons of Burgundy, (at least from foreign observers) is that he's different. He's notorious for picking late, which has worked great at times in cooler vint... Read More

  • Well as we know from the Rudy K. scandal, Amour, they didn't start bottling ... ... And they even make an Aligote that I can almost drink. The ownership has always been extremely commercial in orientation. Last I heard their properties are held by a real estate holding company.JD, any news on who's looking to buy? If it ends up being another fe... Read More

  • My big day mixing in the wine world as I've kind of helped break this news, owing to a friend of mine who is close to Laurent Ponsot. Same friend from the Netherlands who GregT and I tasted with in San Diego. Anyhow, Peter from WS contacted me this morning for info and I was able to speak with him right after he spoke to Laurent and before the s... Read More

  • You know, I was searching for Aligote and found this thread that was active while I was in Italy in 2014--no wonder I missed it.  The digression into Zappa and the links to Youtube videos have now forced me to bookmark it for quick reference.  I never would have guessed that so many of the contributors here were Zappa heads.  DV defies classific... • Further up this thread, there was discussion of whether Aligote was worth making into a wine on its own or only just for Kir.  Well, here's a less than ringing endorsement for it on its own in the latest "Dirty Dozen" from Wine House in San Francisco: 2013 Aligoté, Domaine Fichet $14.98 net price, $13.48 reorderDomaine Fichet broke away from the...
