Pinot Auxerrois (aka. Auxerrois Blanc)

Auxerrois' tendency towards low acidity makes it suitable to cooler climates, such as England, Ontario's Niagara Peninsula, and in British Columbia where it is grown with some success. A descendant of a Pinot Noir and a Gouais Blanc cross, it is relegated to the higher Haut-Rhin vineyards in Alsace, where it is most often blended into that region’s bulk wine, ‘Edelzwicker’. It is also grown in the northeast Moselle region of Germany. Wine made from Auxerrois tends to be dry, with a musky aroma and some floral and citrus character.

Auxerrois is an international name of intrigue. You are obscure, even in your Alsatian home, where you seek a secret refuge under the roof of ‘Edelzwicker’. With the trouble you’ve had in establishing your own identity in the Old World, one wonders why celebrities like Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Malbec would ever wish to borrow your name as an alias. Perhaps the cool environs of North America will give you a fresh start in a Read more »

  • Venturi Schulze Pinot Gris Blend Vancouver Island Brut Naturel 2008

Great value under the bottle-cap/crown cap of this wine! Bottle fermented. Done in the style of champagne, but lacking of any major yeasty/biscuity notes you might typically expect with such. A dry wine with a fairly fine bead, creamy texture, soft acidity/freshness, and surprising complexity. A very longish but subtle finish. Honey, pear, and a... Read More

Quite perfumed on the nose with hints of apples and flowers over a gently spicy, nutty base. This is bright and vibrant in the mouth, with assertive green pear and lime flavors and a terrific texture that shows a hint of roundness but relies on the acidity to remain succulent and nervous. There's a nice white floral note on the back end, along w... Read More

  • Wine is so confusing! I love a good Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Bianco. But what do I ... I ... as a white wine) and Auxerrois in the Blanc Pinot family.  Yeah, it’s a bit confusing. But what’s even more confusing is that the wine labelled as “Alsace Pinot Blanc” can be a blend of all four of these grapes, though typically one finds the variety Pino... Read More

Before I get into all the specifics of tonight's wine, I should mention I have a little cold. Not bad (or I wouldn't waste the wine), but it might make things taste differently than they should. The color, not at all skewed by my cold is a nice straw yellow, so I'm not expecting it to be too bland - it's not terribly pale. On the nose, I am g... Read More

  • Well if THAT's not the most boring topic I have started... but after a summer of excess (or actually, a couple of years) I've got to buckle down and get in shape. I've decided to follow a low-carb diet called "Paleo" or "caveman diet". Basically it's all about cooking from scratch with veggies, nuts, meat and very limited dairy and fruit. No gra... Read More
