Named after the Roman god of wine, Bacchus is found in Canada’s westernmost province of British Columbia, in the United Kingdom, and most widely in its native Germany, where Bacchus flourishes in the heart of German bulk wine production and beer country. Two-thirds of Germany’s Bacchus plantings are found in the Rheinhessen with much of the rest in the Franconia district, an area famous for its Bavarian wheat beers and the unique smoky brews known as Rauchbier.

This productive cultivar was created by crossing Müller-Thurgau with a Silvaner-Riesling cross. Bacchus is a white wine-producing varietal that adapts to a broad range of climates and benefits from its ability to grow in less favorable vineyard sites than Riesling and even Müller-Thurgau. It produces full-bodied wines, with attractive fruit and floral characteristics, similar to Muscat. As an early budder, Bacchus can be susceptible to spring frosts, and its typical lack of acidity can prove challenging, particularly in hot vintages. In Read more »

  • While traveling through Napa Valley last month I noticed that all the Vineyards I visited had roses planted around their crops. They're planted and watched closely for any early signs of infestation on the land. They monitor the Roses closely and upon early signs of problems, protective measures are taken to make sure the grape vines receive a s... • Schlink Haus White Blend Auslese 2011

Not much going on here on the nose, just a touch of herb and citrus pith. In the mouth, this is very simple with a nice balance between sugar and acid that supports easy citrus fruit flavors. The acidity pops nicely on the back end and drives the brief finish. 80pts Read More

  • In April, my group did a terrific tasting exploring the wines of Alpha Omega with winemaker Jean Hoefliger live on Skype.  He's a blast, so if you ever get to meet him at an event, do.  If you are in Napa, I strongly recommend scheduling a tasting at AO in Rutherford.  They craft exceptional wines and have a great facility right off the 101.  Co...
