Blaufränkisch is the most important Austrian red variety to many Austrian vintners despite the fact it is not the most largely planted. Although it's exact origins are not 100% determined, it is believe to be of Austrian decent. The grape's name breaks down to mean, "good, fine" grape. Blaufränkisch thrives deep soils, but also does well in lime soils. The best expressions of the grape come from Central Burgenland and South Burgenland, both sides of Lake Neusiedl and Carnumtum (in lower Austria.) The grapes is generally harvested late and is prone to botrytis-related grape stem rot. Tasting notes: Aroma: dark berry, boysenberry and mineral notes Palate: Appetizing acidity and firm tannin structure. Typical wine making technique: Needs at least two years of aging before it becomes approachable. The best vintages have incredible and aging potential fermented in new French oak barrels. Blaufränkisch is often blended with small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot.

You were pretty much all over with the Cabs which I ... ... that include Sangiovese, Blaufrankisch, or whatever.DV's tasting is interesting because I've had a number of those wines and they're always going to seem like Cab but those in that that particular lineup are really different in style. • Blaufränkisch is a Cabernet lover’s best friend, but still very much its own grape. And that's an asset in today’s wine climate. Generations of wine drinkers stuck to the same old grapes - but this is an era that privileges discovery. Blaufränkisch is not new, per say, but an increasing number of Americans are gulping it down by the bottle. Plan... Read More

  • This Topic is partially intended to start a new thread on daily wine drinking as the earlier topics are just too long and too general.  How about telling us more about your choices and helping me start a new thread for the next generation, so to speak?  The "why" is the interesting part for some of us - but pictures are always welcome; after all... Beautiful cranberry coloration with blueberry juice hues, especially around the rim....nicely saturated with a velvety sheen overall and clear too! Incredibly huge caramel aromas, with big bold berries (blueberry, black cherry, raspberry), along with hints of plum, Earthy wood (oak), mocha vanilla creme and just a light alcoholic tinge.
