Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is the most important Austrian red variety to many Austrian vintners despite the fact it is not the most largely planted. Although it's exact origins are not 100% determined, it is believe to be of Austrian decent. The grape's name breaks down to mean, "good, fine" grape. Blaufränkisch thrives deep soils, but also does well in lime soils. The best expressions of the grape come from Central Burgenland and South Burgenland, both sides of Lake Neusiedl and Carnumtum (in lower Austria.) The grapes is generally harvested late and is prone to botrytis-related grape stem rot. Tasting notes: Aroma: dark berry, boysenberry and mineral notes Palate: Appetizing acidity and firm tannin structure. Typical wine making technique: Needs at least two years of aging before it becomes approachable. The best vintages have incredible and aging potential fermented in new French oak barrels. Blaufränkisch is often blended with small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot.

Blaufränkisch on Snooth

  • Austria is becoming well-known for Grüner Veltliner. This crisp white not ... red grapes, St. Laurent and Blaufrankisch) and the Burgundian classic Pinot Noir. Kamptal Pinot Noir isn’t cheap but it’s well worth a try; one of the best wines I tasted on a visit to the region a couple of years ago was a Pinot Noir made by Rudi Rabl of the Rabl wi... Read More

Beautiful cranberry coloration with blueberry juice hues, especially around the rim....nicely saturated with a velvety sheen overall and clear too! Incredibly huge caramel aromas, with big bold berries (blueberry, black cherry, raspberry), along with hints of plum, Earthy wood (oak), mocha vanilla creme and just a light alcoholic tinge. • The red wines of Austria are an underappreciated jewel of the wine world. Two-thirds of Austria’s vineyard land is dedicated to white varieties. The remaining one-third belongs to red. The red wines of Austria are a closely guarded secret among wine lovers, but demand is on the rise. Vineyard area for red wine grapes has doubled over the past fe... Read More

Creamy vanilla and allspice aromas on the nose with fresh cherry, black currant and plum fruit, a hint of minerality and some earthy notes that nod towards a bit of mushroom. Snoothrank:

Deeply fruited, almost syrupy notes of plum and black currant jam with spicy ground black pepper and thick tarry smoke. Tart, quite acidic and full of zesty cherry and mixed berry fruit flavors on the palate, quite drying on the mid palate with loads of earth, dark spice, concentrated black currant fruit and freshly tapped young sassafras root.
