History of the grape: References to it in the Loire region of France date as far back as the mid 12th century. But its historic moment came In the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu selected it for the garden of Abbaye de St. Nicolas de Bourgeuil, where it was attended by an abbot named Breton (hence the local synonym). Plantings spread into Bordeaux in the 18th century, where it met its life partner Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon came into existence. It is now mostly used as a blending grape there. • Volage Crémant de Loire Rosé Brut Sauvage

    Snoothrank:

Citrus on the nose with a touch of crushed almond meats. Creamy bubbles ride in on dried rose petals. Tart fruit flavors with a bit of citrus pith finishing out with some dried apricot notes. Great value. 90 pts. Read More

  • Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin 2015

    Snoothrank:

Aside from The Reference by Blackwood Lane (2006, 2007 vintages, in particular), this is the purest, most approachable red Bordelais-style wine from British Columbia ever crafted. Dark cherry red in colour, with a bouquet of cherry, ripe plums and a hint of vanilla extract (light oak treatment), and an entry of soft tannic underlay, sweet, pure ... Read More

  • Blackwood Lane Alliance 2006

    Snoothrank:

OK, so let's talk about this second wine by Charles Herrod: after nearly 13 years in the bottle, it looks dark and Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) with bricking at the glass rim... bouquet is slow to open (although decanted), with black currant dominating with a hint of vanilla; entry is smooth, only slightly warm (14% alcohol), with dissipated tannin ... • Blackwood Lane the Reference 2006

    Snoothrank:

Among the first vintages of this garagiste-style wine from Langley, BC (grapes sourced from the southern Okanagan Valley) and made by the more-than-interesting hand of one Charles Herrold, this wine is world-class, certainly: the nose is distinctive with mostly ripe cherry, vanilla and cake spice (flan). Entry is very special for a BC wine: the... Read More

  • Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 edition of Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin is another triumph; the sweet plum nose opens generously an hour after opening, adding a dense chocolate and cherry bed. The purity of the entry is astounding; with bitter chocolate, vanilla, and perhaps cranberry (dried) adding to a plummy confit flavour. There is some well-integrated (not harsh)... Read More

I bought this bottle of wine for £10 from a wine merchant in Sussex.Fronsac is an appellation created in 1936 for red and rose wines from 7 communes around the village of that name west of the town of Libourne and north of the Dordogne river.
