Corvina

Common synonyms: Corvina Veronese, Cruina, Cassabria

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Veneto, Italy

History of the grape: There are 6th century written documents by Cassiodoro, a magistrate of Visigoth King Theodorus, describing a sweet wine made from half dried grapes in Verona that is most likely an early version of Amarone or Recioto made from Corvina. “Straw wine,” the process used to make these wines by drying grapes on straw mats before pressing, is a style of wine-making that was passed on from the ancient Greeks. In 643 Lombard King Rotari wrote an edict protecting Corvina and other local grapes from being pulled. Venice became a center of trade during the Byzantine Empire, and Valpolicella (a name that is a likely combination of ancient Greek and Latin meaning “wine from many cellars”) wines made with Corvina (and traditionally Rondinella and Molinara) became a popular export. • Bolla Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2017

    Snoothrank:

Clear red vino, with muted orange-bronze hues when held against a white light.....watery legs arrive on the inside of the glass after a gentle swirl. The aroma is of spicy alcohol initially, giving way to cinnamon, clove and freshly ground pepper, followed by juicy berries (cherry, blackberry, mild currant), oaked vanilla and leathery notes. T... • Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella Classico DOC 2017

    Snoothrank:

Pours a gentle rustic ruby color, has good clarity and develops sound legs after an aggressive swirl. Very fruit forward aromas of soft cherry, blended with vanilla extract, muted leather and/or tobacco leaf. Flavors that are very much akin to the aroma, with plenty of berry, soft vanilla spice, slight oak and even some dry cranberry astringen... Read More

  • Tedeschi Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2013

    Snoothrank:

With a scent of grape confit, plum and fresh dark raisons, this very dark wine is showing just a hint of "bricking" in the glass. After 60 minutes of sitting quietly in the decanter (and aerated) the wine greets the mouth with gobs of roasted coffee, plum and chewy raison; there is also a vanilla overlay on the back palate with a grainy tannin ...
