Grenache

(aka. Grenache Noir, Garnacha, Cannonau, Lladoner, Tinto Aragones, Alicante)

Traditionally in California, Grenache has mostly been planted in the warm Central Valley, to produce fruity, quaffable reds and pinks. But the emergence of Rhône blends, enthusiastically promoted by a band of winemakers known as the ‘Rhone Rangers’, has sparked an increase in plantings of Grenache in more esteemed California viticultural zones. Significant acreage of this grape is found in Santa Barbara and Monterey counties. Grenache’s ability to produce in warm climates has made it a workhorse varietal not only in California, but also in the warmth of South Australia and South Africa. Grenache-based wines tend to be high in alcohol, with attractive fruit qualities in youth. Grenache’s sweet berry character, makes it a successful candidate for rosé wines, the most famous coming from the southern French appellations of Tavel and Lirac. This hairy-leafed vine produces grapes naturally low in tannin and in color Read more »

  • Mas Doix Grenache Blend Priorat Salanques 2002

    Snoothrank:

Salanques 2002 DOC Priorat Granacha, Carinena, Merlot, Syrah 14% Deep reddish purple Nose of dirt and rich spice, almost like grandmas attic Heavy in the mouth it has a richness that shows a lot of fruit supported by copious tannins. Rich berry flavors framed by pepper and earth draw me back to this wine. Really dirty, as in earthy, and I wonder... Read More

  • Bodegas Muga Grenache Blend Rioja Rosado 2003

    Snoothrank:

Orangish pink though it is a bit dark where I am. Not much of a nose though it might be a bit cold. The palate is light with a dryness throughout and crisp finish. Flavors are light, with some faint berry, light orange, and mainly a flower petal quality. This is two years old I hope that it did not lose so much in so little time. I'll let it war... Read More

Wow, what a difference a few months makes! I opened a bottle of this in August ... bottle of the 2002 Kangrilla Grenache and it was just as beautiful, if not a touch better than the Blewitt. • Clarendon Hills Grenache Clarendon Kangarilla Vineyard 2002

More integrated after three days but it still finished too hot for my taste. Threre's no denying that there's a wealth of fruit and enough tannins to last a long time but will it ever be harmonious? Read More

  • Clarendon Hills Grenache Clarendon Kangarilla Vineyard 2002

    Snoothrank:

Poured one glassful and corked the rest and put it in the ref. As suspected it's a huge wine, with impenetratable black color. For my taste there's too much confectionary nose. After 15 minutes in the glass there was nothing but confectionary nose, maybe candied cherries? Not my cup of tea today. I'll taste it again in couple of days to see if i... Read More

  • Clarendon Hills Grenache Clarendon Kangarilla Vineyard 2002

    Snoothrank:

The color is amazingly striking. It is typical deep, dark garnet, but it has an intense sparkle to it that I have not seen before. The nose is truly world class. I find roasted wood, candied black cherry, more candied black cherry, and Graham cracker. The palate is deep, dark, but bright. It has great structure and wonderful balance. The layers ... Read More
