Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Marsanne is native to the northern Rhone valley in France. There, it was the traditional blending partner of Roussanne, but has slowly been taking over because of its greater reliability. It is becoming the primary variety in appellations such as St-Joseph, St-Peray, and Crozes-Hermitage. The role of Roussanne had been to bring acidity to the blend, since Marsanne can be flabby, but when grown in the right place, picked at the right time, and not overcropped, Marsanne can produce balanced wines. This variety also produces excellent wines in Switzerland and in nearby Savoie, where it is known as Grosse Roussette. Marsanne is used in blends throughout the Languedoc, but is not one of the varieties Read more »

  • I'm digging this thread out of the pile since I had an opportunity last ... their Coco Blanc (Roussanne, Marsanne, Muscat) and their Syrah.Side note - I was the only one in the tasting room at Occasio so I got to talk quite a bit with the person doing the pouring. Come to find out, he's moving to NC in May to be nearer his children, he'll be a... Read More

  • At their best, the whites are ethereal... if made from those god-like fruits ... fruits known as Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier (with a little Grenache Blanc thrown in for approachable, flowery juvenilia).&nbs Read More

  • M. Chapoutier Côtes du Roussillon Villages Bila Haut White 2015

    Snoothrank:

The 2015 Bila Haut Blanc Cotes du Roussillon is a masterful blend of Grenache ... Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Marsanne and other varieties; it has aged gracefully over the 3 years it has stood in the bottle, evoking rich spicy fig, orange, more spice and orange peel on entry... but measured out perfectly. A steal, but drink up now and buy up t... Read More

  • Gabriel Meffre Cotes du Rhone "Saint Vincent" 2017

    Snoothrank:

The 2017 Saint Vincent Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a very fragrant (flowers, wild grass, and vanilla) with a reasonably smooth, slightly stringent entry; flavours are tisane, and somewhat neutral white fruit - perhaps gooseberry. This is a good quality sipper as a aperitif or with seafood. Delicious for the price and vintage. 87. Read More

  • It is a good go-to. The CdR is unique though, and while there are copies all ... ... it blind as Roussanne/Marsanne and that's what it was but a good iteration of it. Dirt cheap and really nice was Cave les Couteaux du Rhone VV - I think it's a co-op but it was a classic CdR with that earthy and fruity mix and it was dirt cheap. Another inexp... Read More

  • Fancy a bit of GSM to liven up your holiday? Is this your first time? ... and ... and 19% Mourvedre (and 3% Marsanne, the white Rhone variety). The sharp eyed Snoother will notice that the back label says that the ‘M’ stands for the Mataro; ‘don’t panic it’s simply another name for Mourvedre.  Then there’s Australian winemaker Grant Burge’s Ho...
