Petit Verdot

Name of varietal: Petit Verdot

Common synonyms:m Petit Verdeau, Petit Verdot Noir, Verdot, Bouton, Carmelin

Parentage of the grape: Balisca (Albania via Greece or Rome)

History of the grape: It is thought Petit Verdot (“little green one”) predates Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux, as far back as the 16th or 17th century. It is traditionally used as a blending grape to add body for its spicy and tannic characteristics, along with Cabernet and Merlot and sometimes Cabernet Franc. Because it is a late ripener and a persnickety grower, not much of it was replanted after the Phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century. It is still used in Bordeaux, but mostly in warmer vintages. It has also taken hold in warmer climates of the world where it has more of a chance to thrive, such as Australia.

Characteristics of the grape: dark, tannic, blackberry, black plum, spicy, clove, tobacco, cedar, black pepper.

  • Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin 2015

    Snoothrank:

Aside from The Reference by Blackwood Lane (2006, 2007 vintages, in particular), this is the purest, most approachable red Bordelais-style wine from British Columbia ever crafted. Dark cherry red in colour, with a bouquet of cherry, ripe plums and a hint of vanilla extract (light oak treatment), and an entry of soft tannic underlay, sweet, pure ... Read More

  • Blackwood Lane the Reference 2006

    Snoothrank:

Among the first vintages of this garagiste-style wine from Langley, BC (grapes sourced from the southern Okanagan Valley) and made by the more-than-interesting hand of one Charles Herrold, this wine is world-class, certainly: the nose is distinctive with mostly ripe cherry, vanilla and cake spice (flan). Entry is very special for a BC wine: the... Read More

  • Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 edition of Osoyoos Larose le Grand Vin is another triumph; the sweet plum nose opens generously an hour after opening, adding a dense chocolate and cherry bed. The purity of the entry is astounding; with bitter chocolate, vanilla, and perhaps cranberry (dried) adding to a plummy confit flavour. There is some well-integrated (not harsh)... Read More

  • Chateau Pey la Tour Reserve du Chateau 2015

    Snoothrank:

The 2015 Reserve du Chateau Pey la Tour is another good value, good quality Bordeaux Superieur from Dourthe. Merlot dominates - as expected (88%) with the usual vibrant nose of cherries; colour is quite dark and brooding, with an entry that, with decanting, reveals plum and cherry and some residual tannin and oak. Rich are very Bordeaux. Leave o... Read More

  • Opus One Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley 2003

    Snoothrank:

A bottle of questionable provenance. My brother-in-law found it in an estate with a few other bottles that were not quite as expensive. So, this wine was clearly past its prime. It was slightly sour, but the the disappointing thing is that it completely lacked character. It was "watery"--no fruit flavors, not tannin, it must have had some ac... Read More

  • Columbia Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Dusty and dry but quite fruity aromas of plum, raisin and red currant. Nicely spiced and red fruited on the palate with raspberry, red currant and Bing cherry flavors with a touch of herb clinging to the edges and streaks of resinous tannin coming through on the chocolatey finish.89 pts Read More

  • Amazing varietal that has flourished here in the Levant area of Spain. Try Casa de la Ermita Petit Verdot 2006 for a superbly distinctive interpretation of the varietal.
