Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • If you haven't had wines from Romania, you’re missing out. Big time!I know this is a bold statement. With so many amazing wines being produced worldwide today. But, with that being said, I am convinced that there should be room in our cellars for some good bottles of Feteasc Neagr (Black Maiden in English), arguably, the most renowned native gra... There's a lot of new money getting into the wine business - sports stars, movie people, etc., and they need to buy land, hire expensive consultants, buy expensive grapes, and then they can talk about their wine, as if they made it. The people who bought in the 1960s and 1970s, or who come from long-standing families, they ca... Read More

Its key grap... Read More

  • Read up on Lindeman's thread, and thought this would be a good topic to discuss. To Greg's point about blending Merlot and sometimes Cabernet in with Chianti blends, I hear that trend had been on the downswing, which is probably a good thing for Chianti proper, though there will be some really good "Super Tuscan's" made from the blending as well.... • Villa Emozione Brut Franciacorta 2013

    Snoothrank:

Dark toast and biscuit aromas with an oaty, buttered note with crisp fruit notes of lemon and grapefruit. Lively and tart on the palate with searing acidity, fresh citrus flavors of grapefruit and tangerine, melon rind and more smoky toasted notes of wheat and barley, finishing with more tart acidity and puckering citrus pith.
