Rotgipfler is a natural crossing between Traminer and Roter Veltliner originally documented in 1840 in Styria. This variety is quite rare and is almost exclusively grown in Austria. Rotgipfler prefers fertile medium weight lime soils and warm hillside locations. It is quite sensitive to winter frosts, prone to botrytis and often matures late. To the eye, the wine is golden-yellow, on the nose the pronounced bouquet is full of spicy, smokey nuances and stone fruits. Rotgipfler is often vinified dry, off-dry and sweet and is quite often blended with Zierfandler. Together with Zierfandler, Rotgipfler established the reputation of the famous wines of Gumpoldskirchen.

Rotgipfler on Snooth

  • Johanneshof Reinisch Rotgipfler 2013

Clean and light aromas of peach and apricot with hints of elderflower and apple on the nose. This showcases a smooth and rich mouthfeel with melon and lemon fruits coming in on the palate with some nectarine and grapefruit flavors as well and a lightly floral finish of white blossom. To finish this is zesty, refreshing and warm with a perfumed t... Read More

  • Gebeshuber Rotgipfler 2013

Intriguing notes of fresh clay and chalky lemon on the nose with floral aromas of honeysuckle and some buttery cream notes as well. Tart and bright on entry, this shows plenty of melon and lemon flavors with more intriguing tropical fruit notes of coconut and mango and a spicy vanilla finish that pairs perfectly with the creaminess of the palate... • Stadlmann Rotgipfler Tagelsteiner 2013

Gorgeous and floral, this has perfumed rose petal and blossom aromas with waxy pear and red apple fruit and a warm bready note on the nose. In the mouth this continues to be quite perfumed and floral with a thick, rich mouthfeel and more apple and pear notes. There's a wildflower and honeysuckle palate here that finishes spicy and bold with a hi... Read More

  • Stadlmann Rotgipfler Anninger 2014

Pleasantly floral aromas of violet with red apple, passion fruit and banana notes on the inviting nose. Its pleasantly thick and round in the mouth with loads of peach, lemon and grapefruit pitched against a backdrop of zesty acidity. This is quite approachable and easy drinking, definitely a summer sipper with a pleasant depth to it. Read More

  • Alphart Rotgipfler Rodauner 2006

Stone fruit peach aromas a little oak, toast, and some apricot. Nice palate even with some earth. Teeny touch of residual sugar with good acid. As continued to eat it with my dish, it got milkier, oakier, smell and tasting more like a chardonnay. And then later when I went back to drink it on its own again, I retrieved the stone fruit, floral... Read More

  • I am open to suggestions that are relatively easy to procure, on the dryer side, and have some level of complexity- I tend not to like a one-dimensional, flat wine.  At my last tasting of Asian influenced foods, I paired a Trefethern Dry Reisling, along with 2 other whites.  People liked it ok, but thought a bit sweet tho.  The white rhone blend... Very steely...I almost taste little shredded steel chunks. Not much fruit...very german/austrian. Great with any food that it would normally go with. Read More
