Sémillon

Common synonyms: Wyndruif (South Africa)

Parentage of the grape: undetermined, likely native to Bordeaux and/or surroundings

History of the grape: Little is documented about the early years of this grape, which is surprising due to its distinguished popularity in the regions where it is grown. It has been used in quality production in France, in the areas in and around Bordeaux for centuries. It is there that it is found in elegant dry white wines, most often blended with Sauvignon Blanc. But perhaps even more importantly, its predisposition for Botrytis cinerea (a.k.a. “noble rot”), which has an astounding effect on the grape (as long as it is healthy), pinpointing its sugars and aromas for the Cadillac of sweet wine, Chateau d’Yquem of Sauternes. These wines can take long cellar aging and are some of the most sought after and expensive wines in the world. In more accessible forms, it is found in the late harvest dessert wines of lesser grade Sauternes (which are still Read more »

  •  I recently had to have a fair amount of miscellaneous dental work done - ... was  a Mount Pleasant Semillon from the Hunter Valley (2009) which I have had many times from previous vintages, and is world renowned.  Obtained for a song. Finally, I found an inexpensive (regular AOC) Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016 from the Meursault commune by Henri Da... • Myriad Semillon Tofanelli Vineyard Napa Valley 2019

    Snoothrank:

I always seem to get tropical fruit with these Tofanellis--pineapple, banana, kiwi. Acidity makes for a very refreshing wine--and leaves my tongue tingling. Good wine, but I think I prefer the Myriad McGah bottling. Read More

  • Clos du Soleil Fume Blanc 2017

    Snoothrank:

This Bordeaux Blanc blend (83% Sauvignon Blanc and 17% Semillon) carries a scent of lawn grass, gooseberry, kiwi and a whiff of vanilla (oak); entry is very crisp - though not unbalanced or unexpected for this region (Similkameen Valley, BC Canada), with healthy acidity, musky, grassy, grapefruit-citric, white berry flavours with a slight nut-oa... • L'Ecole No. 41 Semillon 2016

    Snoothrank:

The L'Ecole No. 41 Semillon (14% Sauvignon Blanc) carries a medium yellow colour and an inviting ginger-oak-gooseberry nose with a good dollop of lime rind. Entry is velvety-smooth, with just a hint of warmth, oaky spice overlaying s bed of gooseberry and fig. This is a very good Bordeaux-style white that recalls Hunter Valley whites from Aust... • Chateau Doisy-Vedrines Sauternes 2007

    Snoothrank:

The 2007 2nd Growth Doisy-Vedrines is mead-yellow in the glass, darkening slightly from when laid down 9 years ago. The nose is most inviting, with Seville orange marmalade, honey and tropical fruit such as papaya and mango. Entry is heavenly, with more marmalade-citrus, honey and raison. Finish is smooth, lusciously sweet and slightly nutty.... Read More

  • L'Ecole No. 41 Semillon 2012

    Snoothrank:

The 2012 Semillon (with 15% Sauvignon Blanc) from the esteemed L'Ecole No. 41 is quite a treat: the colour is lightly golden, and the nose an invigorating, spicy, nose-twitching, gooseberry. Entry is quite luscious and mature, with more white berry confit, musk and white pepper. Delicious. Much like Hunter Valley (NSW, Australia), only somewh... Read More

  • Haven't had it yet, but intend to purchase a L'cole no 41 Semillon (2012) at the nearby Cascadia store (wine and beer outlet near Strawberry Vale, Victoria BC).  This will definitely be quite different - probably more like a Hunter Valley example (Australia).  Rare to find here in Canada and especially rare from this producer in an already bottl...
