Type(s) of Wine the Grape Produces:

Syrah. Shiraz. Sirac. Schiras. Marsanne Noir. The names can go on endlessly to describe one of the most powerful red wine-producing grapes in the world.

The irony here is that Syrah’s origins could give Carmen Sandiego a run for her international wallet. Syrah’s deepest rooted history lies in the Rhone region of Southwestern France, as the wines that made this varietal famous were from hermitage, located in northern Rhone. The name “Shiraz,” however, gained popularity in Australia where this dark-skinned varietal has long been heavily planted. The birthplace of Syrah is still unknown, with many legends linking together both its aliases, suggesting origins in Iran, Rhone, and Australia.

  • Most were reds, most were syrah - I'll look them for and see which I'd buy - there are some producers that do smokey oak well and I do enjoy.  Also, something for to check out is chardonnay fermented and aged in new oak barrels - the smokey oak comes out in those if aged for 12-14 months. • Sorry about the delay EMark. Like noted previously most, but not all, of Sonoma ... some varieties such as  Syrah, to taint. We’re such an intelligent lot.The taint in this case comes from ash on the fruit rather than the fruit absorbing the smoke. Some winemakers washed their fruit with O3 while others just crossed their fingers. Lab tests hav... Read More

  • I like the spiciness and boldness of Syrah. I haven't tasted many, but the majority were from California, Russian River Valley. I would like to try a French Syrah. Any recommendations on a rocky and floral wine>?
