Achaval Ferrer Malbec Finca Altamira Argentina 2012

External Review:

A dark, powerful red that has cut and grace to its core of vibrant boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry notes. Theres a well of acidity that pushes the fruit through hints of flint, violet and spice to the long, berry-filled finish. Malbec. Drink n... Wine Spectator. I was lucky enough to taste this wine with its own winemaker, Roberto Cipresso, at his Wine Station (next to his wine circus) back in 2009. I can hardly describe how well balanced this wine was, showing strong hints of chocolate and coffee with a tiny wisp of leather, all laid down on a powerful and smooth ripe-red-fruits background. The length was unbelievable and hardly ceased to amaze me, the tannins gently stroking my mouth while the rest did its job. The best wine that I've tasted so far.

Dark but nicely driven, with lush blueberry and fig sauce notes carried by broad spice and anise flavors. Long and lush through the graphite-filled finish, without the raisined edge of the vintage just pure fruit that sails on. Really stretches out i... Wine Spectator. The 2008 Finca Altamira is a bit broader and richer on the palate. It is an opulent wine that combines elegance with power. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it from 2014 to 2028. 94-97 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Finca Altamira should prove to be as good as the 2006, perhaps better. It already offers remarkable complexity in its alluring bouquet, layers of ripe fruit, savory flavors, and great length." (12/08)95 points - Wine Spectator"Gorgeous aromas of crushed plum and fig lead the way for this very dense but remarkably supple offering, loaded with additional blackberry and boysenberry fruit, all laid over Turkish coffee, violet, pastis, licorice and charred mesquite notes. This has a long, long finish. Best from 2010 through 2016. 728 cases made." (07/09)

Vintage: 2007 10/24/2011

The 2007 Finca Altamira was sourced from a 14-acre, 80+-year-old vineyard with yields of 0.75 tons per acre. It was aged in new French oak for 15 months. Opaque purple/black in color, it has an entrancing aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, truffle, black cherry, and plum. Opulent on the palate but with a bit more elegance than the Bella Vista cuvee, it is already revealing complex flavors along with its considerable depth, richness, and length. It will continue to blossom for another 3-4 years and offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2022. Gorgeous aromas of crushed plum and fig lead the way for this very dense but remarkably supple offering, loaded with additional blackberry and boysenberry fruit, all laid over Turkish coffee, violet, pastis, licorice and charred mesquite notes. This has a long, long finish. Best from 2010 through 2016. 728 cases made. -JM (100% old-vines malbec) Saturated, bright dark ruby. Very floral nose features vi...
