Adanti Montefalco Sagrantino Arquata 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

deep and spicy on the nose with earthy cocoa notes, and a dark, forest floor, juniper scented note. In the mouth this is extracted with tons of tannins as well as tons of rich, chewy, dark fruit. 90pts

The Farm covers 30 hectares of land, of which five are given over to mixed crops, five to olive groves and twenty to vineyards, and lies in the municipality of Bevagna on the hillsides of Arquata and Colcimino, an area renowned since antiquity for the high quality of its oil and wine. Around the year 50 Anno Domini, in fact, Pliny the Elder wrote the following about the Itriola grape, typical of Bevagna, the ancient Mevania of the Umbrians, the Etruscans and the Romans: "Itriola Umbriae Mevanatique Agro Peculiaris Est". - 1960 saw the start of the renovation works to the old convent of the Philippine friars, which stands on ruins dating back to the Roman age and to the late Renaissance, as well as the re-planting of the old vineyards and the planting of new ones. Today the winery is equipped with all the latest technological innovations and has selected vineyards of Grechetto and Sagrantino (native species of vine), Barbera, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sangiovese and others. It produces wine, grappa and extra-virgin olive oil, about 30% of which is exported to Europe, the U.S.A., Canada and Japan. Read less

More leather and game notes on the nose with a bit of smoky oak, very quiet, low key nose ~ there are emerging notes of asphalt, rosemary and some milky oak. With a softer entry, and with slightly softer acidity but the tannins are nicely ripe and lead to a mouthwatering palate with earthy, savory elements above the fruit, nice finish with integrating tannins. 91pts

Beginning to show signs of opening, revealing a touch of menthol with black spice notes, sweet black fruits, leather, and smoke. This shows some sweet raspberry fruit with real cut and a fine freshness. The wine evolves in the glass revealing a real elegance and faceted quality that touches on elements of roasted nuts, leather, menthol, and fruit and plays off the rather modest, for Sagrantino, tannins. Interestingly this was an early harvest and is not considered a particularly noteworthy year. 91pts

Very aromatic, with a gaminess that is joined by sweet medicinal tones and the sweetness of a blondie that turns a bit fudgy with air. Notes of black pepper and herbs creep in to fill out the edges. This is a big wine, packed with sweet fruit, but it’s dark and somewhat indistinct and muddy at the same time. The tannins real pop on the finish giving this a bit of bitter coffee on the finale. 88pts

Tight and restrained not revealing much yet but, this has a nice freshness with an herbal Eucalyptus edge, and some leathery tones. Sweetly fruited on the palate with a slightly jammy, wild blackberry tone. This is so ripe the tannins are almost sweet giving this a particularly well-integrated feel and though the tannins emerge on the finish the rich dark fruit never loses the upper hand here. 90pts

Pork fat, dry soil tones, a bit of tar, with notes of green herb seeds/ anise seeds over a strong base of mineral and forest floor notes all combine to offer an impressive array of aromatics which are not matched by the palate. In the mouth this is an angry wine with deep, savory, and almost bitter fruit that has massive concentration but lacks freshness. 87pts

Leathery on the nose with dark, smoky, dried black raspberry tones. The nose grows in the glass to include some aromatic wood tones. Lots of sweet fruit and relatively smooth across the palate, this has sour and bitter notes helping to frame the fruit and reveals subtle notes of pepper, prosciutto, orange peel and clove on the moderately long finish. 92pts

A very leatherish bouquet, almost like live cattle. Rich and powerful with solid tannins that blends wonderfully with concentrated spice and fruit. Drink now or the next couple of years.

Five glasses

From the Adanti vineyard, this slightly dry Italian red wine combines a number of grapes: Sangiovese (65%), Sagrantino (15%), Barbera (10%), Merlot (5%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). It works well with barbequed or smoky meats.
