Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico. Bertani 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Here we have a wine just hitting its stride and full of aromatic tea, dried soil, dried flowers, a bit of fungi, and an underlying sweetness to the emerging notes of dried meat, licorice and cooked fennel. While the nose gives the impression of something older, this is still fresh and tight on entry, with real focus, and very elegant with attractive freshness to the fruit. Very much in the house style with dried fruit tones cast over a bed of fresh cherry fruit. There's plenty of emerging tannin here and underlying minerality, inner mouth umami notes emerge on the midpalate then the fruit tries to explode on the finish which is long and shows complexity younger versions lack. Very acid driven on the finale, with air the nose gains more soil driven components, and complex dried herb and incipient tobacco notes. Raspberry fruit starts to pop on the midpalate, and the finish gains additional layers of flavor. This could probably evolve over the course of day giving a fascinating drinking experience, and remains a good candidate for an additional decade or two of cellaring. 94pts

This shows wonderful development in contrast to the younger Amarone. Full of funghi with leafy, compsty nuances that build on the agelica root spiciness. Hints of cigarette tobacco and powdered sugar add depth. This is still big and rich in the mouth with excellent balance, full of red fruits and a hint of apply sweetness across the midpalate and leading to a clean, long finish. Drink 2008-2016

I agree with Wine.com's review. The bouquet was very rich full of dried fruit and spices. It reminded me of a berry fruitcake! The best part was how full and smooth this wine was in the mouth. Nice finish. This was a unique experience to taste something so bold yet so smooth!

Bright red cherry and raspberry notes abound with some very nice balanced acidity. Subtle dark fruit with elegant, soft oak.

The unique aging process on this bottle is evident throughout the tasting. Smells of deep black cherry lead to a nicely fruited wine with great balance and flavor.

Silken on the palate, with amazing depth and complexity - all dry, port-like fruit, bitter chocolate, dried berry, licorice and anise - an unbelievable harmony of diverse flavors, with not the slightest sign of tiredness.

/ Here is a beautifully aged Amarone that shows profound grace and elegance on all levels. The nose is expertly weaved with cherry, licorice, white truffle, caramel and butterscotch nuances. A tight, fine grain texture characterizes the mouthfeel, and bolsters the wine's enormous intensity and persistency of flavor. It is aged six years in oak casks.

Unlike many other local producers in the Valpolicella region, Bertani owns its own vineyards and Bertani's harvest originates entirely in the firm's own vineyards. Made from Corvina Veronese 70%, Rondinella 25%, Molinara 5% grapes, this full-bodied, dense garnet colored wine tastes of all the red-berry fruits plus a touch of vanilla.
