Bedrock Wine Company the Bedrock Heritage 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2013 Proprietary Red Bedrock Vineyard Heritage comes from the Peterson family’s old vines planted between 1888 and 1895. Amazingly, there are over 22 interplanted varieties in this vineyard, with the bulk of it being 55% Zinfandel and 30% Carignane. The balance of 15% is composed of the other 20 varietals. There are 750 cases of this spectacular wine. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by notes of black raspberries, roasted Provençal herbs, pepper, strawberry jam, kirsch and blacker fruits. Full-bodied, heady, savory, broad and expansive, this fabulous wine showcases the remarkable blending and winemaking skills of Morgan Twain Peterson. Drink now-2024...93-95" WA 12/14 "Morgan Twain Peterson continues to produce a fascinating array of wines from old vine sites throughout California. His 2012s demonstrated what a remarkable young talent he is, and the 2013s detailed below continue his Midas touch with a diversity of grapes as well as historical heritage sites.

Bedrock Wine Co.:
Bedrock is an itsy-bitsy winery making wine in a converted chicken coop. Fruit from only the most excellent vineyard sites is hand pitch-forked into the destemmer, fermented in open top redwood and stainless vats using only native yeasts, and are manually basket pressed by winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson into the sexiest oak from the coldest French forests.

Murky marroon color in the glass. Nose of blackberry and plum—make that prune. Fairly jammy on the tip of the tongue. This declines closer to neutral on subsequent tastes—may be a result of air, or maybe not. Serious tannin also neutralizes fruit. Some stoniness in the back of the palate.

The 2013 Bedrock Heritage Wine is one of the most intriguing wines in the range. Smoke, cedar, tobacco and a host of savory notes meld together in a powerful yet nuanced wines built on delineation and energy. Even with all of its intensity, the 2013 remains lifted, floral and light on its feet for such a big wine. This is by far the most polished and refined wine I have tasted from the Bedrock Vineyard, where the wines have often been much riper and bigger.

Firmly structured and dense with fruit, this offers blackberry and dark Asian spice aromas and concentrated smoky plum, licorice and black pepper flavors, with tannins tightening the finish. Hands-off for now. A blend of Zinfandel, Carignane and 20 other field-blended varieties. Best from 2016 through 2022. 1,000 cases made.
