Belle Pente Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Cuvée Contraire 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

91 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): This is a really lovely effort that is stylistically understated yet delivers plenty of character. A fresh, pure and elegant nose of primarily red berry fruits where there is just a trace of crushed leaf leads to detailed, layered, balanced and delicious middle weight flavors that dance across the palate while offering fine complexity on the lingering finish. This isn't a 'wow' wine but it's beautiful in its fashion because it's so easy and pleasurable to drink. This is one of those wines that could certainly be enjoyed now or if your taste runs towards a bit of secondary character, then aged for 4 to 8 years as the balance is impeccable. Recommended. Comments: Outstanding. Drink: 2012+. (Jan 2010)

Belle Pente (bell-pont') means "beautiful slope" - a perfect description for our hillside vineyard site in the Yamhill-Carlton District of Oregon's Willamette Valley. Our inspiration comes from the exquisite wines of Burgundy and Alsace, and follows the guiding principle that great wine is made in the vineyard and merely nurtured in the winery. Our standard practices include organic & biodynamic viticulture, carefully managing vineyard quality and yields, and meticulously hand sorting the grapes that arrive at the winery to remove all underripe or damaged fruit. Our 3-level, gravity-flow winery is designed for gentle, natural winemaking in small lots, with minimal handling and manipulation, to produce premium wines of character and distinction. Belle Pente is owned and operated by Jill & Brian O'Donnell. The 70 acre property is located on a historic farm 2 miles east of the town of Carlton in the new Yamhill-Carlton District viticultural area. The vineyard site rises from 240' to 500' with south, south-east, and south-west exposures. The first vineyard was planted in 1994, and now includes 16 acres of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. Our estate vineyard is supplemented with high quality fruit grown to our specifications in partnership with carefully selected independent Yamhill County vineyards. The winery is open on Memorial Day and Thanksgiving Weekends, and at other times by appointment. Read less

A classic Oregon nose of briar, earth and dark berry fruit aromas that have that distinctive hint of animale to them merges into complex, intense and wonderfully broad dusty and mouth coating flavors that are not as big as its stable mates yet the depth here is really impressive and it continues onto the moderately long finish.
