Benmarco Expresivo Mendoza 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

96 points James Suckling: This is great wine with fabulous transparency and clarity showing blackberry, blueberry and floral character. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a superb finish. 80% malbec and 20% cabernet franc. A wine that gives pleasure now but will be even better in 2020. (5/21/16)

The philosophy is a simple one: grow great grapes and make wines that are true to their place. Minimal intervention during the growing season and through harvest allows the true fruit character to develop. Combine this with Susana’s winemaking skills and the result is wines that express the powerful fruit flavors, the ripe tannins and the incredible length and balance that can only come from this one place: Mendoza. Although Malbec makes up most of this blend, its biggest impact is in the color. The Expresivo has a bright violet color that is often found in Malbec. In the nose, the other four varietals take over, creating an aroma that is more Bordeaux than your usual Argentine wine, with lots of currant, cherry jam, hay, and a hit of barnyard. In addition to the fruits, the wine presents vanilla, dark chocolate, and coffee in the mouth. The acidity and tannins call out for food, and in today’s case, it was a perfect match for rib roast, with the wine complementing the beef and cutting through its richness.

Wine Spectator ReviewA very modern style, with polished texture and dense, creamy layers of fig sauce, raspberry ganache, mocha and sweet incense. Has a long, dense finish, but this just glides along. Very enticing. Malbec, Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Drink now through 2013.Wine Tasting NotesWafting aromas of red currants, red and black cherries and mildly smoky and sweet vanilla oak. Layers of currant fruit, dense black cherry, and notes of brown spice (cocoa, nutmeg), dark chocolate, and hints of sandalwood. Keeps showing its stuff as it breathes in the glass - for folks who want the full experience and may be a bit impatient, decanting is a good idea. Perfect balance, great concentration and length loaded with fine, ripe tannins for having with food or for aging. Pairs well with a wide range of foods including grilled steak, roasted pork loin, veal, medium-strong cheeses, and most cream sauces. This wine should also age beautifully for 10 - 25 years. 50% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Bonarda, 10% Syrah, 5% Tannat
