Big House Wine Company Petite Sirah the Prodigal S 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes Arresting hue of this very deep and dark red is a testament to the beauty of this boy. The bouquet is muscular with black fruits (blueberries & cassis) dominating the introduction. Then a touch of dark chocolate mixes with overtones of creamy oak and spice in a swirl of bodacious body that one would consider gravitas. All of this delight leaves you longing for another sip. This wine is very enjoyable to drink now as you can taste the fruit opening as it airs in your glass, but this wine is also complex enough to develop even more interestingly with a few years of bottle aging.

Big House Wines:
The Big House wines were born of the subversive notion that the California climate is more hospitable to the rollicking, sun loving grapes of Mediterranean France, Italy and Spain than some other varieties that should probably remain nameless (eg: cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and merlot). The Big House wines were born of the subversive notion that the California climate is more hospitable to the rollicking, sun loving grapes of Mediterranean France, Italy and Spain than some other varieties that should probably remain nameless (eg: cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and merlot). In the big house we have gone back to our roots, blending these distinct varieties to create a far more complex wine that elegantly matches a wide variety of cuisine, from pizza, to BBQ ribs and roast chicken. Why Is It Called Big House? Our Soledad Winery in Monterey County, is a mere ankle iron’s toss from the Soledad State Correctional Facility, aka The Clink, The Slammer, The Hoosegow, The Cooler. Our vineyard portrayed next to The Pokey in a visually benevolent milieu likely not familiar to the “residents” of the Big House, yields a most compelling wine. The Big House actually resides on an oenophilic temporal door between California and the Mediterranean. Our winemaking philosophy is driven by several very salient themes, that include: 1) Having as much fun as possible in the enterprise of winemaking as the government agencies will allow; 2) producing wine and wine labels that will inspire and move people; 3) retaining as much of the natural qualities of the grapes as possible, and making wines that are friendly both to foods and the people that consume them; 4) Always giving priority to lesser known varietals in the hopes of uprooting the homogeneous mass that is currently controlling out palate and our wallet. This smells nice earthy with a slight edge of char right out of the bottle. Big black grape skin and blueberry fruit are edged with hints of petrol, powdered sugar and bay leaf. In the mouth this is round and fleshy with plenty of acid to help support the red cherry fruit and nice sandpapery tannins that add a hint of astringency to the mouthwatering mid-palate. With that blueberry dichotomy of sweet and sour this remains lively in the mouth with good length and volume and a nice finish with a touch of asphalt and hint of woody mintiness reinforcing the slightly rustic quality of the wine. A rich mouthful of fruit and spice though and an attractive package. 88pts

Nice alternative for a pizza vino. Good QPR for some richness, with a hint of the fruit bomby but nothing too offensive.

Heady blackberry and blossom aromas and flavors. Smooth aftertaste that is more grapey than distinctive.

One of the first things that struck me about wine a couple of years ago while still in college was just how much letting wine breathe changes it. This 2006 Big House Petit Sirah from Bonny Doon was like a new feral kitten (excuse the domesticated animal metaphor – I’ve been craving a pet) when I opened it 5 hours ago. Clawing and scratching with all that acidity and alcohol. Now it’s gently purring next to me on my desk. Now it’s showing more of the fruit that was hiding behind the tannins. I pointed out so many different fruits while drinking it that I’m starting to think that it’s mostly marketers who make up the labels on wine. Each palate will taste different fruit, so it’s really learning to connect the sensations you feel to past experiences and taste memories. Wine is so chemically complex and varied that each person has an enormous playground of flavor molecules from which to choose from in each bottle.
