Blue Mountain Chardonnay 2016

Member Review by zufrieden:

This is a fine, cool climate Chard with gentle, acidic apple aromas; entry is very slightly oaky, but with more vanilla than wood hardness, with a lot of spice on the mid-palate. Finish is medium long with more ginger spice, pear and Granny Smith or Bramley cooking apple (UK). Neutral compared to warmer climate Chard, but well made and typical of the Okanagan. 89.

Blue Mountain welcomes you to experience wines using exclusively estate grown grapes from its South Okanagan vineyard. Focusing on varietal wines made from Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, and Pinot Noir, Blue Mountain strives to produce complex, age-worthy wines, consistent in style while allowing the expression of both the terroir and the individual growing season. At Blue Mountain, it also means the use of 100% estate-grown grapes. Following the estate concept to its fullest extent sets Blue Mountain apart from most North American wineries. Indeed, in the burgeoning industry of the Okanagan Valley, Blue Mountain can make the rare claim of more than 36 years of continuous grape production by one family. The grapes that are harvested for Blue Mountain wines are sourced solely from its own vineyard. A philosophy of sustainable land management ensures limited chemical input. Using classic varietals, which originate in France in growing conditions like our own, we limit our crop yields resulting in higher concentration of the fruit. In the winery, winemaker Matt Mavety combines new technology with traditional techniques. The wines are handled minimally to ensure that the delicacy and intensity of flavours cultivated in the vineyard are expressed in the wine. French oak barrels are used in the cellar to soften and add complexity. All of these factors combine to result in a style and finesse fitting to the varietals. Read less

Considering the high regard for this wine and vintage by "professional" tasters, I expected a little more. Colour is an inviting green - very Chablis-like - with a bouquet dominated by vanilla, spice and oak with apple pie in the background. Entry is warm and slightly harsh due to oak-forward and fruit-overwhelmed taste. Finish is medium and reasonably satisfying. The oak is not integrated yet, but aging 2-3 years can solve this. 88 points.

Another tangy, wildly delicious Chardonnay from the folks at Blue Mountain. The 2010 has a tart apple pie nose with some hard water mineral-like scent that continues to pervade the palate upon entry into the mouth. Nice structure for aging and beautiful Chablis-like cleanliness typical of Blue Mountain whites. A medium to long, satisfying finish. As good as it gets for the style anywhere in BC. Recommended.

Well, what can one say? Another brilliant production by the Family Mavety in the price friendly mode; excellent, bright clarity with an almost Champagne-like brioche nose. Fruit is understated in the Chablis style, but the entry is extremely well balanced and clean with some finesse. This wine is excellent for current drinking, but will rest on its laurels for another 2 years or so. Well done!

Light yellow in color - typical at this age - this wine opens to the nose with gobs of citrus (especially lime rind) and cold table grapes. The attack is quite tart - very much like Premier Cru Chablis, though perhaps a bit short on minerality. A good, moderately lengthy and spicy finish. Nice quality and capable of aging another 2-3 years given the fresh acidity.
