Brovia Barolo Villero 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Big aromas hint at chocolate and red licorice over wild berry, almost boysenberry fruit, and coal, on the nose with hints of rosehips and flowers emerging with air. A gorgeous wine, almost supple, though packed with earthy, rosepetals, rhubarb, small wild strawberry fruit and red cherry fruit. Broad and full in the mouth though with excellent focus, ripe fine tannins and integrated elegant leaving an elegant impression on the palate. This has terrific purity and a lovely feel with the tannins buffered by the fruit. 93pts

“In the wonderful hills of Barolo wine, where the landscape begins to take on a different, more animated guise, there is a family that has always been associated with wine: the BROVIAs. The Winery had been set up as far back as 1863 and is settled in Castiglione Falletto. Paying always attention to the importance of the “terroir”, with time and an uncompromising attitude to the selection of the finest vineyards in Langa, the family has been able to acquire great vineyards in the Barolo growing area: Rocche, Villero and Garblèt Sue’ in Castiglione Falletto and Ca’Mia and Brea in Serralunga d’Alba. Thus, the philosophy of the Winery is to propose great personality Barolos (as with the other wines produced), all made in the same way, but with very specific and clean characteristics, always different among them; Barolos that faithfully reflect the richness of our great Langa vineyards. “ Read less

Lots of dark fruit on the nose which offers up a nice blend of balsamic and rose notes. This is soft and broad in the mouth, with good acidity and modest tannins supporting simple red fruit framed with a hint of camphor.  This is wide open and easy to drink already with a clear fresh feel that turns a touch short on the finish. A rare miss from Brovia. 88pts

Very pretty on the nose with notes of raspberry fruit, clay soil and mint. Lightly floral top notes and a hint of cinnamon. Firm, lean and pure in the mouth with unfettered cherry fruit, phenomenal depth and a silky finish. This shows more flesh than many 2008s and should prove to be a knockout with some time in the cellar. 93pts

From a freshly opened bottle Dark and smoky on the nose with plums in alcohol and rich earth and sottobsco notes. Top notes of pollen, saffron and lilac add hight and lighten it up 3 Big and a touch viscous in the mouth yet with superb freshness with bright acidity and tons of soft tannins 3 Dark and a touch mysterious in the mouth with licorice and cocoa notes up front that yield to dark, reticent fruit that is tinged with balsam mid-palate notes 2+ Very tight and taut on the finish with very savory fruit that has a strong mineral/tarry character and ends with spicy notes of salame on the finale 2+ (5/2008) 91pts

From a bottle open 2 days Hightoned yet a bit pruny on the nose with a bit of nut skin and macerated flowers adding interest. Adds some feral animale notes and a touch of candle wax 2+ Medium full in the mouth and well integrated if seemly a bit hot with a touch of drying tannin 2 Herbal on entry with a restrained core of dried raspberry fruit that is a touch earthy and rustic 2 Finishes long and a touch hot with better poise but still a touch hot, a nice minty flourish on the finale 2 87pts

The 2008 Barolo Villero is impeccable and harmonious from the very first taste. Layers of exotic spices and dark fruit caress the palate eliminating virtually any sensation of tannin. The 2008 is an unusually fleshy expressive Villero loaded with class and personality. Dark plums menthol and a host of balsamic aromas and flavors wrap around the finish. The Villero is a bit rounder and fleshier than the Rocche today but it is just as gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038. Robert Parkers W

Medium red. Cherry earth cocoa powder and dried flowers on the lightly medicinal nose; a more liqueur-like cherry aroma emerged with aeration. High-pitched minerally and fine-grained with terrific depth to its medicinal dark cherry and floral flavors. A classic primary Barolo with superb tannins and outstanding persistence. 93+ Stephen Tanzers IWC.

The Villero is a heavier, denser Barolo from Brovia that is nicely nuanced. It has a fine minerality, along with delicate aromas of roses, red berries, and hazelnuts. All in all a very impressive Nebbiolo.

The Villero is a heavier, more dense Barolo from Brovia that's nicely nuanced with fine minerality. Aromas of roses, red berries and hazelnuts make this Nebbiolo well worth trying.
