Calera Mt. Harlan Chardonnay 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

Not yet reviewed; 2012 vintage rated 94 points by Wine Advocate, which wrote: Showing more tension and energy, the 2012 Chardonnay Mt. Harlan is an incredible effort that exudes ripe apple, white peach, white flowers and mint aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and elegantly styled, the acidity is beautifully integrated, and the wine builds in richness and depth with time in the glass. Coming from limestone soils, 100% barrel-fermented and aged 10 months in 30% new French oak, it's a brilliant Chardonnay to drink over the coming 4-5 years.

Ninety miles south of San Francisco, the vineyards are at 2,200 ft. elevation. The heat of the season is mitigated by cooling sea breezes from Monterey Bay. Several varietals are grown, with Pinot Noir having the lion's share at roughly 70 % of production, followed by Chardonnay and Viognier at approximately 21 % and 9 % respectively. An entirely gravity-fed production facility, the new building is a testament to artisanal winemaking, with average yearly production nearing 30,000 cases of all varietals. Read less

Every wine at this winery was fantastic, and this particular one was exceptional. Upon leaving Morro Bay for our 4th of July vacation, my Wife did not close the trunk all the way. All of a sudden, the sound of broken glass is heard smashing behind our car. A full cooler and an 8-pack box of splits falls out. After returning to pick them up, not one of the bottles are broken, just two wine glasses from another winery had broken. If it wasn't for this stroke of luck, I couldn't write this storied review.
