Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva "Coltassala" 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

"A decadent nose of vanilla, brambleberries, resin, coffee beans, tobacco and hot stones with a touch of citrus and other fresher elements. Full-bodied and very intense on the palate, but the ripe tannins also show plenty of firmness. The bright acidity carries this through to a delightfully long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2021."- James Suckling

The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." Thus Volpaia is not just another magnificent tourist attraction, but a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are all directly or indirectly involved in the winery. Dusty and earthy tomato leaf and red currant notes on the nose with light cranberry and cherry. In the mouth, this shows well with rich red fruit, mostly cranberry and cherry and chalky earth, fresh violet and bold acidity. Nice long finish with mixed berries. 90 pts

Lots of berry and earthy notes, with flavors of dark berry, cherry and earth. Drying tannins are evident, backed by some nice acidty to balace things out. Leaves the mouth somewhat dry, with a long finish of black cherry. Outstanding - 90 points.
