Chalone Mont Chard 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Chalone Vineyard is one of the few wineries in the U.S. growing grapes in limestone-based soils, the same as in Burgundy. The spare, well-drained ground, limited rainfall and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who wanted to make top-flight Burgundian-styled Chardonnay. Graff made his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay.

Melon and lemon aromas with just a hint of cream. Lemon curd and vanilla flavors, very creamy, with a bit of acidity and a warm finish.

Rich buttery, vanilla laced, coconut flavored chardonnay. Low acids up front with medium minerality. This wine is very spicy - from the oak. A real oak monster. Served with crab salad.

Funky animal nose. Spritz of acidity and frnech vanilla. Rich and warm with a long cedar finish with a citrus backing.

We want to drink this again. Buy more at $10. Creamy and golden like the California sun.

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. A far cry from the legendary Chalone bottlings we recall from years past, this smaller-scaled effort is all angles and edges, and its modest appointment of dilute, loosely-defined fruit is pushed aside by chemical heat and an undisguised streak of grapefruity bitterness at the finish.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

We're certain that you'll enjoy this Chardonnay. Its fresh appeal, touch of vanilla oak and bright apple and pear fruit character will please many palates. Chalone's wines are highly acclaimed and very well-made. This white is exemplary of their winemaking standards and offers a glance into their portfolio.

Chalone Vineyard Chardonnay Estate Grown Chalone Appellation 2008 750ML

Capturing the distinctive characteristics of our unique terroir, our 2008 Estate Chardonnay holds fragrant aromas of ripe pear, green apple, hazelnut, vanilla and baking spice. Bright fruit flavors glide across a lithe and supple midpalate, balanced by toasty oak and a creamy texture. The vineyard's limestone soils leave a distinct footprint with a crunchy rock minerality that persists through the middle and holds the finish. The fine balance of vibrant acids with weightier oak influences makes an excellent match to rich, creamy foods such as soft cheeses and chicken dishes with heavier sauces. - Winery

This wine should continue improving in the bottle over the next two to five years. Chalone Chardonnay is the white wine for the red wine drinker, which means it complements a wide variety of foods: seafood risotto, herb-rubbed roasted chicken and veal picante are just a few great matches. Truly hedonistic.
