Member Review by edub:

Very nice wine with grapey fruit, good tannins, spice, pepper, balanced, with a decent finish. Excellent value, as this wine has distinctive qualities with a good bang for the buck.

The vineyard was first reported in 1648 when a local landlord, Denis de Mullet of La Tour StLambert rented it to a farmer in exchange for the wines produced. Caronne is derived from "Carona" the name of a local spring source, and Gemme a corruption of "James". In the middle-ages the locality was a parish on the grounds of a subsidiary to the Templar Headquaters at nearby Benon a few kilometers inland. Pilgrims on their way to Saint Jacques de Compostelle, having crossed the estuary from Blaye, would rest here before continuing their way across the Landes to the Spanish Border. The Parish was abolished during the Revolution and it is about this time that the first records of wine production at Caronne appear. In 1900 ownership of Caronne passed to Emile and Eugène Borie. The sons of Eugène would later cede their shares to their uncle and purchase Ch. Batailley and later Ducru-Beaucaillou while Emile's descendents would remain the sole owners of Caronne until this day. The property is now managed by Jean, grandson of Emile and François, his nephew. Read less

For the price, absolutely stunning. Superb value for money. Cedar box, black currant, strawberries.

Suprisingly, considering the (at best) medicore vintage, the wine displayed an excellent nose and held plenty of ripe fruit. The finish was long and smooth without being overbearing and a pleasant, if muted, hint of oak helped to give the wine an excellent rounded balance. Food pairings. Game, Beef, Roquefort or similar cheeses. 88/100

A bright nose of red fruit with a perfumed edge follows onto the palate with added nuances of smoke, black pepper and subtle oak.

The aromas here are seriously woody, and that problem also appears on the palate. It has fruit, but the weight to balance is not there yet. This should develop over the next 4ndash;5 years, but the wood is always going to be a major feature.

Considerable depth of flavor here, with complex ripe tannins, topping the dense black fruits. Therersquo;s spice from the wood, some stalky tannins from the fruit, and an edge of youth that will need 3ndash;4 years to show its potential.

Complex, classic Bordeaux elegance with a depth and purity of fruit found only in the greatest of vintages. Blackberries, cedar, anise and wild blueberries flavor this medium- to full-bodied Cabernet blend. Young and balanced, this wine holds promise for 10ndash;15 years of enjoyment.

Offers raisin and dried fruit, with very ripe fruit aromas and coffee and oak undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. This is pumped up, but I like the flamboyant character. Best after 2011.

Space limitations did not allow complete tasting notes for this Cru Bourgeois, but 2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be accessible young yet evolve for a decade or more because of their concentration and tannic structure.

Loads of ripe plum and berry, with hints of mineral. Medium- to full-bodied, with lovely integrated tannins and a medium finish. Best after 2005.
