Chateau de Bern Sainte-Croix du-Mont 2007

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in London's Kensington [thesampler.co.uk] for £8.Sainte Croix du Mont is a small AOC for sweet white wines from a plateau made up of fossilised oyster beds around the village of that name on the north-east bank of the river Garonne about 25 miles south-east of the city of Bordeaux. Wine production goes back to at least Roman times The appellation is less prestigious and less expensive than the better known Sauternes appellation on the other side of the river but it uses the same grapes in the same way. The grapes are harvested late in order to allow the development of a fungus called Botrytis to develop which contributes to the sweet taste. Chateau de Bern was bought by Denis Chassagne who owns other properties in Bordeaux in 2007.The wine consists of 85% Semillon,10% sauvignon blanc and 5% muscadelle.I started my bottle last night with my supper of a plate of cheese and I did enjoy it. It is very sweet and there is plenty of an apricot and pear style fruit there, It is not a bad desert wine although I have had better and it is far better value for money than most Sauternes. In 2008 and 2009 it won a gold medal at the Concours Agricole Bordeaux wine competition.
