Château d'Orschwihr Riesling Bollenberg Alsace 2014

Member Review by Robert Dallas Gray:

It can be tricky, this variety, especially at this price point; too often it's perfectly pleasant, appley and fresh, but just a bit ... dull. This, however, is what you hope for: a beautiful golden colour, perfumed, almost viognier-like asparagus nose, and a clean, red apple palate with unexpected complexity and a mouthwatering tangy finish that keeps your tongue zinging for minutes on end. At about 30 months in bottle, from the excellent 2007 Alsace vintage, this should be at its best right now.

The history of the Château d'Orschwihr goes back to the beginning of the Xl th century. Pope Léon IX of Eguisheim stayed here in 1049 during the consecration of the church of the next town. During the 13th century, the Château became property of the Habsburgs. In 1513, it was bought by the bishopric of Strasbourg, and later by local nobility. The current owners purchased it in 1854, after the revolution. In 1934, the whole castle was damaged by a fire. It was partially rebuilt in 1936. The view above dates from 1857, it is a lithography by Rothmuller. The domaine has been continuously expanding since 1986, to reach the current 23 hectares spread over 7 communes, including 2.5 ha on five Grand Crus: the Rangen, Kitterlé, Kessler, Pfingstberg and Kitterlé. It includes also vineyards on famous "terroirs" like the Bollenberg, the Hueben and the Enchenberg, the later being a monopole. The Château d'Orschwihr owns its vineyards and has total control over the yields, thus guaranteeing an exceptional aromatic concentration as well as an impressive longevity. Exported all over the world, the great wines of the Château d'Orschwihr can be found in the best restaurants. Read less

Sharp mineral on the nose, then nail polish on the mouth. I would only drink it to be polite.

The pale golden color and honied petrol on the nose are much more friendly than the palate of this wine. However it is crisp and mostly balanced, and I do like the lingering nutty finish.

Great rich petrol and mineral nose, really hints at a promising wine. Sadly i am denied! Its not bad, just average. There's some petrol and minerality, but the richness is lost and in comparison seems insipid. Overall average

Deep golden color, with honey and apricot aromas. On the palate this is sweet and bright, a good example of an Alsatian gewurz, with much more sweetness than a New World version.

Bright green apple fruit and flinty hints characterize this dry Riesling from small Alsatian producer Château d'Orschwihr. A great dry Riesling like this one is perfect with shellfish and most seafood, as well as white meats and (of course) Alsace's famous choucroute garnie.
