Chateau Filhot Gold Reserve 1998

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £15 from a wine merchant in Sussex [www.southdownscellars.co.uk] Sauternes is an appellation created in 1936,although viticulture here goes back centuries, for sweet white wines produced in five communes around the village of that name close to the town of Langon on the west bank of the Garonne river about 20 miles south of the City of Bordeaux. The wines are sweet because the grapes are harvested late and a fungus called Botrytis has affected the grapes. My bottle is a cuvee from Chateau Filhot, a second growth in the great 1855 classification.I started it last night with a plate of bread and cheese. It is a deep golden amber colour. This is a very sweet wine almost like honey or syrup.with some apricot style fruit with some citrus as well especially on the finish. I thought this a lovely wine and a good accompaniment to the cheese
