Château Pavie Macquin Rosé Blend Bordeaux Rosé Rosé 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

Robert Parker rates this wine at a perfect 100 points and writes: "Give Gerard Perse credit. People thought his numerous assurances that 2000 was the greatest Pavie ever produced were premature as well as arrogant. However, after tasting this extraordinary blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (made from low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare) six separate times in 2003, it is unquestionably one of the most monumental wines Bordeaux has ever produced. Bottled in March, 2003, about nine months later than other 2000s, the color is an opaque purple, and the bouquet offers up notes of liquid minerals, blackberries, cherries, and cassis intermixed with spice box, cedar, and white flowers. On the palate, it exhibits a massive display of richness and extract, yet with pinpoint delineation and vibrancy as well as a 60+ second finish, this is the kind of phenomenal wine that Perse's critics were afraid he might produce - a no-compromise, immortal wonder that represents the essence of one of Bordeaux's greatest terroirs. Life is too short not to own and consume the 2000 Pavie. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050."

Terroirs are the expression of a place, a witness to history. Infinitely rich and varied, their complexity is expressed through their biological, geological, topographical and climatic characteristics. Precious and fragile, they are the greatest thing that nature offers us and they cannot be imitated. Their quality is an irreplaceable ingredient in the production of great wines. To produce great wines in the image of a terroir: the idea is simple but the practice requires patience and humility. Pavie Macquin, this eponymous chateau, finds the key to its history in one man, Albert Macquin (1852-1911). It is to him that Saint Emilion owes the idea of grafting vines onto rootstocks, thereby saving the region from ruin by phylloxera. Henri Enjalbert wrote, “During more than thirty years, Albert Macquin was the master of the transformation of the vineyards of Saint Emilion”. The current owners of the chateau are his grandchildren: Benoit and Bruno Corre, Marie-Jacques Charpentier and their children. They have shown, like their ancestor, a great attachment to this admirable terroir. Read less

Baked plum, baking spice, black currant, vetiver, a touch funky – a bit extracted up front then quite seamless, lovely richness and purity to the fruit, a touch of spicy herb up front, real power on the finish which ends a bit abruptly (89-90)

Sweet. Slightly acidic, but smooth. A little oaky.

a merlot based rose offering nice raspberry and strawberry notes, a little bit of red spice combined with the red fruit characteristics, dry and enjoyable

Actually 4.5+ points. Color, this wine has a deep dark ruby red color, very seductive. Nose, there are a lot of black fruits going on, black licorice, mind toasty oak, vanilla, a hint of coffee beans, very complex nose indeed, some smooth nice dirt and dry leaves coming through also, extremely aromatic. Midpalate, very silky, black licorice dominating, black fruits, it is a little bit (just a bit) hallow on midpalate!, lush, smooth, dry, big, bold. Finish, this wine shows a lot of finesse, very elegant, luxurious, super silky, long, very long finish (60+ seconds and still feeling it!!), smooth nice tannins, mouth filling, very well balanced, layers and layers of black fruits coming through. Overall, this wine is very well made. It clearly shows a lot of potential. It has a nice roundness. It has not peaked yet. I would put it away until 2023-2047. I am enjoying this wine a lot! I would only recommend it to a very good wine expert. I am easily 96+ on this effort. I can see this wine reach 97 in 25 years. Happy drinking!
