Clos du Bois didn’t start small and build up like many other wineries - it started with a bang. When it produced its first vintage in 1974, it already had 520 acres under vine in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County. When Frank Woods was coming up with the name for his winery, he thought of “Woods Winery,” obviously named after himself, but his children had something else in mind. They were taking French at the time, and instead of “Woods Winery,” they thought of “Clos du Bois,” which loosely translates to “enclosure in the woods.” Obviously the name stuck, and Clos du Bois was born. Since then, Clos du Bois has come a long way. From 520 acres, the winery has expanded to 925 acres of their own, along with many partnerships with other wineries. Instead of partnering with a few, large vineyards, the winery works with many small- and medium-sized growers across numerous appellations. Most of the grapes it purchases from other vineyards are from Sonoma County, but some come from Coastal California as well. Erik Olsen, their current winemaker, joined in June 2003, and has since taken those grapes and made them into very well-received wines. Read less

Nice wine, deep fruit nose with a subtle oak and fruit flavor. It ends fruity with soft tannins and a cigaratte ash. I would purchase this one as a regular with red meat

A wonderful wine from Sonoma County, which produces soft, opulent red wines that taste great with food.

While sourcing grapes from throughout Sonoma County, Clos du Bois does a rigorous selection of the very best lots for their Sonoma Reserve Cabernet. Limited strictly to Alexander Valley fruit, known for exceptional richness and character, this wine represents one of the best values of the region. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, a portion of the fermented must is left on the skins for extended maceration up to 30 days. This draws out the additional flavor, softer tannins and intense color giving the wine richness and intensity. Aging for 18 months in 44% new oak barrels then adds the complexity and nuance that is so compelling in this lush Cab. From the super 2007 vintage, don't miss this incredible value.

To achieve the richness and balance associated with Sonoma County Cabernet, Clos du Bois finds the finest fruit available from this world-renowned appellation. Up to four weeks of fermentation and maceration develops the optimum color and flavor in the wine, while aging in 60-gallon oak barrels adds softness and a light vanillin overtone. The finished wine exhibits deep, berry flavors, a peppery character and a subtle overlay of oak.

Firm, spicy and chewy, with a thread of blueberry and currant keeping it focused through the delicate finish. Best from 1999.

Full and generous cherry and pomegranate flavors give this beefy cabernet a mellow sweetness. It's clean and soft, ready for a steak.

Tasting Notes:

Pretty, assertive aromas are a signature of Sauvignon Blanc, and this wine has them in spades. Refreshing primary aromas of grapefruit, gooseberry and honeysuckle are backed by charming notes of mineral, creme brulee and toast. Crisp, palate-cleansing acidity and juicy fruit flavors mark the palate, where nuances of citrus and pear mingle with hints of nuts and toast before a round, smoky finish.
