Coppo Barbera d'Asti Camp du Rouss 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark, earthy and funky on the nose this shows Barbera as the fruit begins to fade leaving behind complex spice, earth, and dried red and black fruit aromas along with some obvious VA. Smooth, supple and polished in the mouth, while the fruity aromas have faded significantly here the plummy, slightly dried cherry flavors remain on the palate along with earthy edges and a dark mineral edge. The finish is quite abrupt here, with some drying wood tannins appear on the palate here. A bit rustic and rough around the edges, with a touch of wood tannin picked up in barrel turning this harder in the mouth. The VA really blooms in the glass and is excessive making this tough to drink. This is usually a classic but this bottle at least is flawed and undrinkable.

The Coppo family history intertwines with the development of the City of Canelli, which in the early 1900s had already established itself as the Capital of Italy’s famous sweet sparkling wine Moscato (Muscat). The region was also rich in Barbera, but the family followed the trail of sweet bubbles for a little over a century and consolidated. Thus it is under the auspices of Moscato that at the turn of the century, founder Piero Coppo begins producing sweet sparkling wines that become a distinctive mark of ‘made in Italy’ long before Anglo-Saxon custom coined the phrase. The evolution of sweet sparkling wines into drier wines or brut pinot noir based offerings was obvious, as was the need to measure up the Barbera to the big reds from Monferrato and Langa. The company flourishes and becomes solid as the elegant family mansion in the heart of the city testifies, with its long series of cellars tunneled out of the hillside that reveal the different geological layers of various epochs. Piero is succeeded by his son Luigi, who enlarges the family business equipping it with the instruments and facilities needed to compete in a difficult but growing post-war market. Luigi then passes on to his four sons: Piero (named after the founder), Gianni, Paolo and Roberto a philosophy of life and production, a spirit that can be felt in the vineyards they’ve inherited and from which today’s wines are brought to life. A bit dusty smelling on the nose with notes of steeped tea and roasted meat, accented by burnished cherry fruit topped with a fine suggestion of rose petal. On the palate, this is rich and smooth with a streak of acidity that lifts this up like circus tent. The fruit is pure if a bit simple, but the texture here is the big draw. It is fluid yet with an almost imperceptible richness and wonderful vibrancy. There’s a little chocolate taste on the back end and then the finish turns mineral and slightly peppery with some mouth-grabbing tannins that set in late. Youthful but with solid potential. 87pts

Dichtes Granatrubin.

"Camp du Rouss is deep ruby-red in color with garnet highlights. It offers concentrated aromas of crushed black cherry and wild berry jam

Purpurrot, etwas aufgehellter Rand.
