Denbies Zig Zag Red NV

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £10 on a recent visit to Denbies The name Zig Zag is a reference to the Zig Zag road which ascends nearby Box Hill and which was used for one of the cycling races during the 2012 Olympics. The bottle consists of 46% rondo,a hybrid grape created in 1964 in Czechoslovakia to be early maturing and resistant to fungus and frost and now often used in northern vineyards in the UK,Ireland and Germany. 31% of the blend is made up of dornfelder, another hybrid grape created for similar reasons in 1955 in Germany and now the most popular red grape in that country although it is also used in the UK.19% of the blend is regent another hybrid grape created in Germany in 1967.and now widely grown in that country.the UK,the Low Countries, the USA and Switzerland There is also 3% pinot noir and 1% dunkefelder, yet another hybrid grape of German origin.I started my bottle the other evening with my pasta bake supper. I thought it absolutely bursting with a cherry, blackcurrant and plum style fruit. It is full bodied, well structured with soft tannins. In short I thought it a nice wine that went well with my pasta dish
