Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet les Caillerets Premiere Cru 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

Ripe, intense and brilliantly detailed fruit flavours merge seamlessly into a minerally-infused palate. A hallmark Caillerets, with spades of honeyed, floral fruit and round finish. This wine is without question of Premier, if not Grand Cru quality. A charming Puligny-Montrachet that should continue to keep for another 2-3 years at least.

This offers up a huge bouquet of funky notes that range from sulfury tones of spicy greens to dirt, earth, and nutty, brittle tones. Crisp, with a noticeable touch of wood still on entry and brilliant acids helping to drive the toast, dried pear and mineral flavors across the palate but then this drops off quite quickly. The inner mouth perfume is very complex and intruding, mirroring the aromas, but all in all this bottle is disappointing and most likely a victim of the vintage. 87pts

Wooded oak aromas. Good fresh acidity, medium bodied wine, with lots of cedar and oak and a long, toasted vanilla finish.

The age is starting to show and this wine had a particularly funky nose (sulfur? mercaptins?) that was not for me. This wine was not like the other more recent vintages i tried. The finish was better and nice and buttery.
