Domaine de Montvac Cotes du Rhone 2016

External Review by We Speak Wine:

A high-calibre Côtes du Rhône produced partly from young vines in the Vacqueyras terroir, in which Grenache and Syrah express their finesse and fruitiness.A supple, harmonious wine, best enjoyed in its early years. VARIETIES: Ninety-five percent of Domaine de Montvac's wines are planted in terroirs with Vacqueyras AOC or Gigondas AOC status. Our Côtes du Rhône reds and rosés make up about 20% of our total output, so we deliberately downgrade 15% of our noble terroirs to produce our Côtes du Rhône.Even though these are our youngest vines, not yet 10 years old, terroir is nevertheless a decisive factor in the final quality of the wine. VINIFICATION: As for our Vacqueyras and Gigondas cuvées, fermentation temperatures are strictly controlled to preserve each variety's aromatic power. However, maceration time is shorter in order to achieve supple, mouth-watering wines whose essential feature is the aromatic complexity of the fruit. GOURMET MATCHMAKING: Its powerful fruity aromas and subtle tannic structure make this a complete wine, to be enjoyed from its first year with charcuterie or cooked vegetables, not to mention grills perfumed with Provencal herbs; but it can also be kept for 3-4 years. - Winery Varietal/Blend: 70% Grenache 25% Syrah 5% Mourvedre Farming: : non-certified but virtually all organic practices Fermentation: 100% de-stemmed, co-fermented in stainless steel Aging: 5 months in cement tanks Alcohol: 13.50%

This Domaine has been handed down from mother to daughter for four generations. Cecile Dusserre, being the latest and a mother of three daughters of her own, stands a good chance of carrying on tradition. Cecile has designed every aspect of the estate to maximize here fantastic terroir all the while with the least amount of intervention. She practices sustainable agriculture in her 25 hectares of vines. No chemical weeding agents are used and all treatments are stopped in July. The winery is entirely gravity fed so there is very little agitation of the juice or finished wine. Montvac's vines are a grouping of many different parcels with varying soils and microclimates ranging from terraces under the Dentelles de Montmirail to more traditional Chateauneuf terroir of galets roulets with limestone clay subsoils. The old vine bottlings of Vacqueyras Vincila and Variation are the tete de cuvee offerings from this very talented and unique woman in the world of Rhone winemakers.
